Late Surge Falls Short Versus Temple

March 11, 2015

Box Score

PISCATAWAY, N.J. - Four unanswered Rutgers goals tied the game versus Temple with less than five minutes remaining, but the Scarlet Knights were unable to complete the comeback Wednesday at High Point Solutions Stadium in an 11-10 loss.

Four goals from four different players in a three-minute span brought Rutgers (1-6) back to life with the Scarlet Knights trailing, 10-6, with 8:37 to play. Junior Kim Kolodny (Farmingdale, N.Y.), one of three Scarlet Knights with two goals in the defeat, got the run going at the 7:48 mark to bring the score to 10-7.

Sophomore Kristina Dunphey (Hillsborough, N.J.) responded by wrapping around the cage to get free for her fifth goal of the year, cutting the deficit to 10-8. The Scarlet Knight sideline erupted 30 seconds later, when redshirt senior Lauren Sbrilli (Martinsville, N.J.) flashed middle for her 100th-career point, found by Halley Barnes (Garnet Valley, Pa.) who led Rutgers with a five-point day (2g, 3a).

The scoring streak was completed with another milestone goal with 4:49 remaining, when Kolodny found freshman Kerri Puckhaber (Wantagh, N.Y.) in front for her first-career strike. The goal made it 10-10 with less than five minutes on the clock.

But Temple's (7-1) Nicole Tiernan answered with the game-winner with 2:30 left in the contest, cutting along the right side to setup a laser finish - her sixth of the game - and give Temple an 11-10 lead. Rutgers' Dunphey had an opportunity to tie on an 8-meter attempt with 15 seconds remaining, but the shot went off the crossbar and thrown down field to kill the clock.

Senior Candice Dandridge (Cherry Hill, N.J.) had another strong performance in cage with 10 saves and a team-high five ground balls.

Rutgers will hit the road to take on No. 15/17 James Madison on Saturday, March 14 at 1 p.m. in Harrisonburg, Va.
