MINNEAPOLIS - Competing in a highly competitive Big Five qualifier meet Saturday at the Sports Pavilion on the campus of Minnesota, Rutgers gymnastics scored a 194.150. It was the fourth consecutive meet the Scarlet Knights went for at least a 194.000 team mark.
No. 6 Michigan won the meet with a 197.000, with No. 12 Penn State (196.650), No. 20 Minnesota (196.450), No. 25 Iowa (196.425) and RU following. Rutgers will compete in the first session at next week's Big Ten Championships based on the results. The meet will be replayed on Big Ten Network Sunday at 3:30 p.m.
"It was a very competitive meet and a big-time championship atmosphere," head coach Louis Levine said. "We had some strong individual performances, but could not afford to have the slow start we had. We look forward to heading to the Big Ten Championships next weekend and putting together our best meet of the season."
Big Five Results
Rutgers scored best on uneven bars with five of the six members of the lineup scoring at least a 9.725 on the way to a 48.925. Junior Jenna Williams (Bordentown, N.J.) matched her season-best for the second straight week with a 9.875 to lead the way, ranked tied for fifth in the meet. Sophomore April Baker (Andover, Mass.) followed with a 9.800, while classmate Charly Santagado (Celebration, Fla.) had a 9.775. As the leadoff, senior Sara Skammer (Dallas, Pa.) set the tone with a 9.725.
In the second rotation on vault, freshman Sahara Gipson (Oakland, N.J.), freshman Elizabeth Groden (Abbottstown, Pa.) and Skammer all produced a 9.800 to lead to a 48.800 in the event. The score tied a career-best for Groden and set a season-high for Skammer. Senior Luisa Leal (Cali, Colombia) contributed to the rotation with a 9.775.
Not having a bye until the fifth rotation, RU ended the night on balance beam in the fourth and notched a 48.600. Sophomore Claire Jones (Gaffney, S.C.) continued her consistency in the event with a 9.775, reaching at least that score in each of the eight times competing on beam this season. Earning a spot in the lineup for the second time, freshman Makenzey Shank (Phoenix, Ariz.) hit her routine for a 9.750. Junior Claudia Salinas (Allendale, N.J.) (9.725) and Leal (9.700) also both recorded solid marks.
The Scarlet Knights started the meet on floor exercise and totaled a 47.825. Senior Emma Hoffman (Union, N.J.) highlighted the rotation with a 9.700 mark, the ninth consecutive time she reached at least that score.
Rutgers will next make its first trip to the Big Ten Championships in the first session next Saturday. The meet will be televised on Big Ten Network.
