HARRISBONBURG, Va. - An 11-minute span of six unanswered goals drew the Rutgers women's lacrosse team within three scores of its first ranked win of the season. On the ropes, No. 15/17 James Madison found the cage four times in the final six minutes to win by a 19-15 final, despite a resurgent second half from the Scarlet Knights.
Redshirt senior Lauren Sbrilli (Martinsville, N.J.) tallied three of her five goals during RU's (1-7) unstoppable surge that cut the JMU (7-1) lead to 15-13 with 7:03 remaining in the contest. Sophomore Kristina Dunphey (Hillsborough, N.J.), who posted a hat trick to go with two assists, scored twice during the run.
The Dukes dispelled the potential upset with two goals in a flash at 5:48 from Taylor Gress and 5:27 from Brooks Lawler, bumping their lead up to four. Freshman attacker Kerri Puckhaber (Wantagh, N.Y.) kept the Scarlet Knights within striking distance at the 4:50 mark, scoring the second goal of her four-point performance.
But the Dukes notched two more goals to even the second half scoring distribution at 10-10 for the two teams, ending the game at 19-15. JMU's Betsy Angel led her squad with an eight-point outing, scoring five times and assisting on three Duke goals.
For the second-straight game, goalkeeper Candice Dandridge (Cherry Hill, N.J.) made 10 saves in cage.
Rutgers had a solid day on the draw, besting the Dukes, 19-15. Senior midfielder Jenny Vlahos (Manhasset, N.Y.) aided the effort with a team-high four draw controls, and now has 98 for her career.
Rutgers hosts Hofstra at High Point Solutions Stadium on Wednesday, March 18 at 5 p.m. The contest will be streamed live by RVision on ScarletKnights.com.
