PISCATAWAY, N.J. - Forward Jason Wright (Kingston, Jamaica) will join the Jamaica National U-23 squad as they go up against the Cayman Islands National Senior Team in a friendly game on March 8 in preparation for qualifying for the 2016 Olympics in Rio.
"Anytime someone gets to represent their country, it's a tremendous honor and opportunity. Jason has been a key component within the Jamaican Futbol Federation and now has an opportunity to contribute to the Jamaica U23 Olympic Team for Rio in 2016," said head coach Dan Donigan. "He knows this is just a friendly match, but will certainly add to his chances to continue his climb to the Jamaica National Team. We are thrilled for him to represent Jamaica, Rutgers University and our men's soccer program."
Wright, a unanimous selection to the Big Ten All-Freshman Team this past fall, has previously played with his country's U17 and U20 programs. As a member of the U20 team, Wright participated at the 2012 CFU Championships while he was the top scorer at the 2011 U17 CONCACAF Championships and played in the U17 World Cup in Mexico.
Leading Rutgers in his first season "On the Banks" with 10 goals, five assists and 25 points, Wright led all Big Ten scorers and netted the most goals by a Scarlet Knight since the 2003 season.
The freshman forward captured three game-winners during the 2014 campaign, including the play-in victory over Wisconsin giving the men's soccer team the first Big Ten Tournament win of any sport in school history. In addition to his two tallies against the Badgers, Wright also had multiple goal games in wins over Penn, Lafayette, as well as at Princeton.
Earning a spot on TopDrawerSoccer's Freshman Best XI Second Team, he was also named to TDS's Team of the Week after capturing five points in Rutgers' 5-2 Big Ten Tournament victory over Wisconsin. He also collected a pair of assists in the Scarlet Knights' regular season finale against No. 17 Maryland.
