PISCATAWAY, N.J. (April 10, 2015) -- The Rutgers softball team had its seven-game win streak halted by No. 4 Michigan on Friday afternoon at the RU Softball Complex. The Scarlet Knights were topped, 18-0, in the opening game of the series against the Wolverines.
Senior Chandler Howard (North Wilmington, Del.), junior Stephanie Huang (Paramus, N.J.) and freshman Rebecca Hall (Fairfax, Va.) each registered a hit in the loss.
Michigan's Sierra Romero, the Big Ten leader in seven offensive categories, recorded a game-high three hits and six RBIs.
UM added one in the top of the first via a home run from Sierra Lawrence. However, senior Alyssa Landrith (Vacaville, Calif.) sent the final Wolverine down swinging to escape the inning. Landrith followed with a 1-2-3 inning in the top of the second to keep it a four-run game.
The Wolverines went on to plate 10 uncontested runs across the next two innings of play, establishing an 11-0 lead over the Scarlet Knights.
After back-to-back walks from juniors Jordan Whitley (Clayton, Del.) and Melanie Slowinski (Severn, Md.), freshman Rebecca Hall (Fairfax, Va.) took a shot at igniting the RU offense, blasting a line drive through left center to load the bases. However, it was not enough to get the Scarlet Knights rolling.
In the top of the fifth, UM registered seven more runs via five hits. Junior Dresden Maddox (Kennesaw, Ga.), who had entered the circle for RU at the top of the inning, shut down the rally with a strike out.
Rutgers found a burst in their half of the frame. Huang got things rolling with a base hit, followed by Howard with a strong single to center field. However, both runners would be left on to close the contest.
The Scarlet Knights and the Wolverines return to action tomorrow at 1 p.m. for the middle game of the series.
