Softball Keeps Win Streak Rolling

PISCATAWAY, N.J. (April 8, 2015) -- The Rutgers softball team kept its win streak rolling with a 6-2 victory over Princeton on Wednesday afternoon at the RU Softball Complex. It marked the seventh straight victory for the Scarlet Knights and the fourth consecutive win "On the Banks."
RU improved to a record of 20-9 overall and a mark of 4-0 at home, while Princeton fell to an overall record of 10-18.
Junior Stephanie Huang (Paramus, N.J.) led the squad with a 2-for-3 performance at the plate, including one walk and one run. Freshman Meaghan Wells (Piscataway, N.J.) registered a two-run home run for her first collegiate long ball.
Senior Alyssa Landrith (Vacaville, Calif.) opened the contest with two scoreless and hitless frames, striking out five consecutive Tiger hitters.
In the bottom of the second, Wells put RU on the board, registering the first home run of her career to bring in two runs. After back-to-back hits from Huang and sophomore Carly Todd (Deptford, N.J.), senior Jackie Bates (Lincroft, N.J.) brought both runners in with a double to left field. It was junior Jordan Whitley (Clayton, Del.) who kept the rally rolling, sending Bates home with an RBI single of her own to give RU an early 5-0 lead.
Landrith held strong in the circle across the next two innings. Despite giving up her lone hit of the contest in the top of the fourth, the lefty struck out tree Tigers in a row to end the frame.
After the Scarlet Knights loaded the bases in their half of the fifth, Todd drew a walk to send junior Elizabeth Adams (Crystal Lake, Ill.) across, stretching RU's lead to 6-0.
Princeton was able to plate two in the top of the sixth via three hits, however, it was not enough to surpass Rutgers. Sophomore Shayla Sweeney (Barrington, N.J.), who had entered in relief at the top of the fifth, struck out the final Tiger to close the contest.
Landrith earned the victory and improved her overall record to 11-5 on the season.
Up next, Rutgers hosts No. 4 Michigan for its second Big Ten series "On the Banks." The three-game set will begin on Friday, April 10 at 3 p.m.
