Preseason Victory: MSOC Picks Up Win over Bryant

PISCATAWAY, N.J. -- The Rutgers men's soccer team had a strong to start to kick off the preseason with a 3-0 showing against Bryant in exhibition action.
Playing three 30 minute periods, Rutgers had ample opportunity on goal, outshooting the Bulldogs 15-3 with six different Scarlet Knights able to get an attempt off on net.
Mitchell Taintor (Storrs, Conn.) led the way with six shots and put RU up on the scoreboard 1-0 in the 50th minute. The senior Scarlet Knight, who posted a trio of goals a year ago, put a way a free kick from 25 yards out.
Rutgers added two more goals during the final period. Ahmad Faheem (Flower Mound, Texas) was able to find the opening off a Jack Young (Saddle River, N.J.) corner from the far post and newcomer Brian Hawkins (Chesterfield, N.J.) fed Sugor Al Awwad (Abu Dhabi, UAE) 12 yards out at the right post to round out the scoring.
Junior David Greczek (Fairfield, N.J.) and freshman Brian Shushkovsky (Morganville, N.J.) had turns in goal, both ending the afternoon with a save a piece.
"The starting group played the first 30 minutes and most of the second 30 and then we got a look at the rest of the guys. The level didn't drop, which was good, and we created a lot of opportunities," said head coach Dan Donigan. "I would still like to see us finish in the final third and clean up some things in the backfield, but overall for a first game after two and a half days of training, I'm very happy about where we are at."
The Rutgers men's soccer team has one more preseason game on the schedule. The Scarlet Knights travel to NJIT on Saturday, Aug. 22 to meet the Highlanders at 7 p.m. The regular season gets underway on Friday, Aug. 28 at 5:30 p.m. against Siena.
