Volleyball Rolls Colgate in Straight Sets

HAMILTON, N.Y. (Sept. 11, 2015) - The Rutgers volleyball team rolled Colgate with a straight-set victory on Friday night at Cotterell Court. The Scarlet Knights claimed the match with set scores of 25-21, 25-19 and 25-20.
Rutgers improved to an overall record of 2-5, while Colgate fell to a mark of 0-7.
RU finished the match with three Scarlet Knights with double-digits in the kills column. Sophomore outside hitter Meme Fletcher (Overland Park, Kan.) paced Rutgers for the seventh straight match with 12 kills, while senior outside Alex Lassa (Eagle, Colo.) and junior Lauren Cloyd (Champaign, Ill.) contributed 10 kills each. Senior setter Anna Sudbury (Tomahawk, Wisc.) added 37 assists in the win.
Colgate was led by Katie Stansbury with 10 kills, while Molly Smith posted a team-high 14 assists.
SET ONE
Rutgers took a strong control of set one from the start, jumping to a quick 7-3 advantage. Although RU led by as many as four, Colgate found a small burst to tie the score at 13-13. The Scarlet Knights responded with four straight points to reclaim their lead, 17-13. RU continued to expand its edge to 24-18, before the Raiders discovered another burst to pull within three at 24-21. However, Cloyd delivered the final kill to secure RU's win in the first set by a score of 25-21.
SET TWO
Although the scoreboard remained balanced throughout the start of the second set, Rutgers maintained its edge. Colgate continued to inch closer to taking a lead, but RU held its control of the set. With the score tied, 12-12, the Scarlet Knights used a 5-2 run to extend its lead to 17-14. The Raiders attempted to erase the Scarlet Knights' advantage, but RU held at least a two-point margin. An ace from senior Ronnie Komisarek (San Manteo, Calif.), her second of the night, gave Rutgers its largest lead of the set at 23-18. The Scarlet Knights did not stop there, claiming a 25-19 win in game two and a 2-0 control in the match.
SET THREE
Rutgers and Colgate went point for point to open set three, but the Scarlet Knights' commanded the lead. The score was found tied five times until RU was able to pull away with three straight points for a count of 9-6. Colgate generated its first lead,10-9, of the night with a four-point run. However, Rutgers was able to tie the score on two occasions before reclaiming its lead at 12-11. The Scarlet Knights never relinquished that advantage for the remainder of the set, outscoring the Raiders, 5-1, to secure the match win with a set three score of 25-20.

- Rutgers snapped a three-game losing streak with tonight's 3-0 win over Colgate.
- The Scarlet Knights move to 2-0 when winning the first set of the match.
- RU had three Scarlet Knights with double-digits in the kills column for the second time this season - Meme Fletcher, Alex Lassa and Lauren Cloyd.
- Meme Fletcher led the Scarlet Knights for the seventh straight match, nearly eclipsing her fourth straight double-double with a team-high 12 kills and nine digs.
- Lauren Cloyd has notched 10 kills in three consectutive matches.
- Alex Lassa brought her career total to 936 kills, ranking 10th all-time in RU's career record books.
- Senior Ali Schroeter (Bakersfield, Calif.) is nine digs away from becoming Rutgers' all-time digs leader, holding a total of 1,336 career digs.
Rutgers continues its weekend at the Colgate Invitational with two matches on Saturday afternoon. The Scarlet Knights will first take on Albany at 10 AM ET, before facing Yale at 4:30 PM ET.
