PISCATAWAY, N.J. - The rain held off long enough for the Rutgers men's soccer team to collect an 8-0 victory over Loyola Tuesday night at Yurack Field, the most goals scored by the Scarlet Knights since 2000.
The win improves RU to 4-3-1 overall as seven different Scarlet Knights found the back of the Greyhound net.
Redshirt senior JP Correa (Montville, N.J.) netted the game-winning goal in the sixth minute and later tacked on three assists to finish out the game with five points. Sophomore Jason Wright (Kingston, Jamaica) also added in a pair of goals in the win with junior Erik Sa (Watchung, N.J.) and senior Mitchell Taintor (Storrs, Conn.) also contributing a goal and an assist in the victory.
"Eight goals in 90 minutes is not done very often. All the goals were very good goals. There were good build ups and good services into the box and guys finished plays off," said head coach Dan Donigan. "That's the mindset, not have any lapses or mental breakdowns in the course of that 90 minutes regardless of what the score is or what the lead is. I'm very pleased with our offensive output and pretty happy defensively the guys locked down and did their job to keep a clean sheet."
Correa notched his second game-winner of the 2015 season in the sixth minute of the contest. The fifth-year senior picked off a pass in Greyhound territory and took five steps before firing on goal from 20-yards out.
Less than four minutes later, the Scarlet Knights found themselves up 2-0, this time Correa setting up the tally. Sa found Correa along the left sideline, who then used one tap to send the ball to the Miles Hackett (Montclair, N.J.) at the right post for a header into the far corner.
Rutgers headed into the half with the 2-0 edge and led Loyola, 11-1, in shots before exploding for six second half goals.
Wright posted his first score of the night in the 51st minute and RU would add two more over the next four minutes.
Wright opened up second half scoring after Taintor and Correa maneuvered the ball at the top of the 18 to the sophomore, who then found the far corner from 12-yards out.
Sa was the next Scarlet Knight to add to the lead. Correa, on his third and final helper of the game, collected a rebound off a blocked shot by Wright and fed Sa just inside the box for a 4-0 RU advantage.
Taintor then added in a free kick from midfield to put RU up 5-0 in the 55th minute.
Ten minutes later, Wright missed a penalty kick, but made up for the miss shortly after off one of RU's seven corner kicks on the night. Sophomore Ahmad Faheem (Flower Mound, Texas) inserted the ball to Mitch Lurie (Atlanta, Ga.) in the midfield. Lurie served to Wright in the middle of the box. Controlling the ball with his back to the goal, Wright turned and connected on his fifth goal of the year.
Rutgers rounded out the scoring with its bench personnel. Sugor Al Awwad (Abu Dhabi, UAE) and Olisa Eze (Sayreville, N.J.), both with assists coming from Thomas Dovell (Moorestown, N,J.), added to the lead in the game's final five minutes.
The game ended with the Scarlet Knights outshooting the Greyhounds, 24-5.
Only two of Loyola's shots were on frame and stopped by David Greczek (Fairfield, N.J.). The Greyhound's Tyler Beaudoin made three saves in the loss.
The Rutgers men's soccer team returns to Big Ten play on Saturday, Oct. 3 when the Scarlet Knights host Penn State at 7 p.m. at Yurcak Field.
