Rutgers Game Notes PISCATAWAY, N.J. - Rutgers (6-11, 0-4) returns to rugged road of the Big Ten to meet Ohio State (11-6, 3-1) in a 6:30 p.m. tip-off on Wednesday at 19,500-seat Value City Arena. The Scarlet Knights will be working to return to the win and earn their initial league road victory. The Buckeyes have won seven of their last eight contests, but will also be looking to bounce back from a loss.
Wednesday evening's game will be televised live on BTN with Cory Provus calling the action and Shon Morris providing the analysis. On the radio, the contest will be broadcast live on the Rutgers IMG Sports Network, WOR 710 AM in New York & WCTC 1450 AM in New Brunswick. Chris Carlin will serve as play-by-play announcer and Joe Boylan will provide commentary.
The contest will mark the third meeting on the collegiate hardwood between RU and Ohio State, with the series tied 1-1. Last season, Rutgers dropped a 79-60 decision to No. 20 OSU before a sellout crowd of 8,003 at the RAC. Bishop Daniels scored 17 points, but the Buckeyes shot 51 percent (30-of-59) and out-rebounded RU, 48-40, to earn the victory. The Scarlet Knights defeated Ohio State, 97-96, in triple overtime to win the Holiday Festival at Madison Square Garden on Dec. 30, 1978. James Bailey had 31 points, Daryl Strickland had 17 and Abdel Anderson contributed 16 in the victory. A Bailey slam dunk with 34 seconds remaining proved the decisive score.
Despite 22 points from Mike Williams, Rutgers fell 90-56 to Nebraska on Saturday evening at the RAC. The Scarlet Knights were unable to overcome a substantial size disadvantage and were out-rebounded 43-25, which resulted in a 52-20 disparity in points in the paint. Williams was 7-of-12 from the field and a perfect 7-of-7 at the charity stripe. With four frontcourt players sidelined by injuries, a strong shooting performance was essential. Unfortunately, Rutgers connected on 33.3 percent (17-of-51) of its field goal attempts and just 11.8 percent (2-of-17) from three-point range. Nebraska supplemented its frontcourt advantage by shooting 56.9 percent (37-of-65).
Frontcourt players Shaquille Doorson, Ibrahima Diallo, Deshawn Freeman and Jonathan Laurent have combined to miss 37 games due to injury. Players in their first season on the Division I hardwood have combined to play 1,364 minutes in 64 games for the Scarlet Knights this season.
Ohio State suffered an 85-60 loss at Indiana on Sunday afternoon. The Buckeyes were out-rebounded 50-31 and trailed 48-18 at the half in a contest that the Hoosiers led by as many as 36 points. Freshman guard JaQuan Lyle shot 11-of-20 to score 29 points in the defeat. Four players average double figures in scoring, including junior forward Marc Loving with a team-best 14.7 points-per-game. OSU ranks 10th nationally in blocks (6.1) and 19th in field goal percentage defense (38.1). Ohio State lost three of its first five home games this season, but has won seven straight at VCA.
