Rutgers Game Notes
PISCATAWAY, N.J. - Rutgers (6-12, 0-5) returns home to host No. 22-ranked Purdue (15-3, 3-2) in a 7 p.m. tip-off on Monday at the RAC. The Scarlet Knights will be working to return to the win column and earn their first victory over a nationally-ranked foe since downing No. 4 Wisconsin at the truncated Pyramid last January. The Boilermakers, who have been ranked as high as No. 8 in the coaches poll this season, will be seeking their initial Big Ten road victory of the season.
The game will be sponsored by AT&T. At halftime, the Rutgers Irish Step Dancing Club will perform and nachos can be purchased for just $2.00.
Monday evening's game will be televised live on BTN with Kevin Kugler calling the action and Stephen Bardo providing the analysis. On the radio, the contest will be broadcast live on the Rutgers IMG Sports Network, WOR 710 AM in New York & WCTC 1450 AM in New Brunswick, as well as on Sirius 83 and XM 195. Chris Carlin will serve as play-by-play announcer and Joe Boylan will provide commentary. WRSU (88.7 FM) will also broadcast the game.
The contest will mark the eighth match-up on the collegiate hardwood between RU and Purdue dating back to 1953, with the Boilermakers holding a 6-1 advantage. The Boilermakers won both meetings last season, 92-85 in West Lafayette and 61-51 at the RAC. Bishop Daniels scored 17 points and D.J. Foreman set a new career high with 15 in the most recent meeting at Mackey Arena on Feb. 26. On Feb. 12, RU limited Purdue to 40 percent (21-of-52) shooting, but struggled to find its own shot, making 33 percent (18-of-54) of field goal attempts. Rutgers defeated Purdue 81-73 at Madison Square Garden on Dec. 4, 1975 during the team's 31-0 start en route to the Final Four. Senior forward Phil Sellers had 31 points and junior point guard Eddie Jordan had 17 in the victory.
Despite a game-high 20 points from freshman guard Corey Sanders and four players in double figure scoring, Rutgers fell 94-68 at Ohio State on Wednesday night. The Scarlet Knights played a strong opening half and held the lead at the midpoint, but were unable to retain the momentum in the second frame. Sanders, the Big Ten's leading freshman scorer who posted 17 points in the opening 20 minutes, was 7-of-14 from the field and 4-of-8 from behind the arc. He was supplemented by Omari Grier, who added 14 points. Foreman had a season-high 13 points and led the team with nine rebounds. Daniels added 12 points, seven rebounds and four assists. The Buckeyes shot 48.9 percent in the second half and established a 31-15 advantage in rebounds. As a result, OSU outscored RU 55-27 over the final 20 minutes.
Rutgers once again competed without the services of four injured frontcourt players - Shaquille Doorson, Ibrahima Diallo, Deshawn Freeman and Jonathan Laurent. The quartet has combined to miss 41 games this season due to injury.
Vince Edwards scored 19 points, Isaac Haas had 14 and Caleb Swanigan finished with 13 points and nine rebounds to help Purdue defeat Penn State 74-57 at Mackey Arena on Wednesday evening to match its best 18-game start in the last 22 years. The Boilermakers established a +17 (42-25) advantage on the glass to remain the only team in America to outrebound every opponent. A.J. Hammons posted also posted 13 points versus PSU and averages a team-best 13.8 points-per-game. He has scored in double figures in eight straight contests, a career-long streak.
