PISCATAWAY, N.J. - Rutgers (6-13, 0-6) hosts its second consecutive nationally-ranked foe when it welcomes No. 9 Iowa (14-3, 5-0) to the RAC on Thursday for a 7 p.m. tip-off. The Scarlet Knights will be working to return to the win column and earn their first victory over a nationally-ranked foe since downing No. 4 Wisconsin at the truncated Pyramid last January. The Hawkeyes have won 11 consecutive Big Ten regular season games dating back to last year, its longest such streak since 1969-70 (14). Iowa's 5-0 league start matches its best since also beginning 5-0 in 1996-97.
All fans are encouraged to wear black to the game Thursday evening, as it is a designated "Black Out."
The game will be televised live on ESPNU with Adam Amin calling the action and Craig Robinson providing the analysis. On the radio, the contest will be broadcast live on the Rutgers IMG Sports Network, WOR 710 AM in New York & WCTC 1450 AM in New Brunswick, as well as on Sirius 83 and XM 195. Chris Carlin will serve as play-by-play announcer and Joe Boylan will provide commentary. WRSU (88.7 FM) will also broadcast the game.
The contest will mark the third match-up on the collegiate hardwood between RU and Iowa, with the Hawkeyes winning the prior two meetings. Last season, D.J. Foreman had 10 points and eight rebounds as Rutgers dropped an 81-47 decision to Iowa in its first trip to Carver-Hawkeye Arena. Iowa made 50.8 percent (30-of-59) of its field goal attempts and established a 39-33 rebounding advantage. In the initial meeting, the No. 14 Hawkeyes capturing an 87-73 victory on March 17, 1989 in an NCAA Tournament opening round match-up in Providence, R.I. Tom Savage scored 26 points in loss, which followed an Atlantic 10 title for the Scarlet Knights. Eddie Jordan and current television analyst Jeff Van Gundy were assistant coaches on the RU staff under Bob Wenzel.
Guard Corey Sanders, the leading freshman scorer in the Big Ten, posted a career-high 23 points for Rutgers in a 107-57 loss to No. 22 Purdue Monday evening at the RAC. The Scarlet Knights were unable to overcome a significant size disparity that resulted in the Boilermakers establishing a 63-23 advantage on the glass and a 30-9 buffer in second chance points. Sanders, who was 10-of-20 from the field, was joined in double figures by Foreman, who scored 13 points on 4-of-6 shooting. The sophomore also grabbed a team-best seven rebounds.
Rutgers once again competed without the services of four injured frontcourt players - Shaquiile Doorson, Ibrahima Diallo, Deshawn Freeman and Jonathan Laurent - The quartet has combined to miss 45 games. Jordan stated post-game that Doorson (foot), Diallo (foot) and Freeman (knee) would not return this season.
Iowa earned its ranking, its highest since 2001 (No. 7), after notching a pair of victories last week over No. 4 Michigan State on the road (76-59) and Michigan at home (82-71). The Hawkeyes have played nine teams ranked in the RPI Top 50, going 6-3 in those contests. Iowa's three losses have come by a combined 12 points, including a one-point loss at Iowa State. Jarrod Uthoff is the only player in the nation with 315+ points, 100+ rebounds, and 50+ blocks and Peter Jok is the reigning Big Ten Player of the Week, averaging 19.5 points & 3.5 rebounds. Iowa has won 10 of its last 14 true road games, dating back to last season.
