LONG-TIME RIVAL RETURNS
The Scarlet Knights' homestand continues on Tuesday hosting Princeton in nonconference action. The longest standing rivalry in the RU record books, Rutgers and Princeton meet for the 58th time in history.
RU began its current four-game homestand on Friday night with a double overtime draw with Michigan.
The Wolverines took the 1-0 lead in the 15th minute of action, but the Scarlet Knights knotted the score at 1-1 before the intermission. From the left side, Ross Tetro fed Dante Perez inside the box. Perez, who was charging on net, controlled the ball, passing it to Niel Guzman at the center of the Wolverine net. Guzman played the ball off his chest and blasted it off his left foot into the lower right corner to tie the game in the 38th minute.
Twice Rutgers had chances at a game-winner in the second half that would ricochet off the crossbar, including Ryan Peterson's attempt in the 62nd minute and Guzman's header in the 84th minute.
RU had an opportunity for the golden goal moments into the first overtime. A pair of Wolverine defenders along with keeper Evan Louro slid down to thwart a shot by Thomas Dovell at the far post. The ball made it past the Michigan scramble to the right foot of Perez, but his tap went over the crossbar.
ABOUT PRINCETON
The Tigers enter Tuesday's game against the Scarlet Knights at 5-4-1 overall and 0-1-1 in the Ivy League. Last week, Princeton picked up a 3-1 win over Seton Hall and fell 1-0 to Brown in conference play.
Princeton is led by Greg Seifert with 12 points (5G, 2A) and Benjamin Martin with seven points (3G, 1A).
In net, Josh Haberman has registered a 1.16 goals against average with .745 save percentage.
LAST TIME VS. PRINCETON
Jason Wright scored both Scarlet Knight goals in the Rutgers men's soccer 5-2 loss to Princeton on Oct. 7, 2014 at Roberts Stadium.
Rutgers wasted no time on getting on the scoreboard with Wright giving the Scarlet Knights the lead four minutes into play. Wright, on his fourth goal of the year, was set up by Ross Tetro who centered a long ball to his teammate to speed past the Princeton defense for the shot.
The Tigers responded, however, with three unanswered goals to up 3-1 by the half. Cameron Porter put in the equalizer in the 12th minute from 18-yards out into the top right corner of the Scarlet Knight net.
Princeton's Thomas Sanner, on the first of his three tallies of the night, gave Princeton the lead for good seven minutes later.
Princeton took a 3-1 edge into the half with 12.8 seconds remaining in the opening stanza.
In the early moments of the second half, Wright cut RU's deficit to one. With his team-leading fifth goal of the year in the 54th minute of play, Wright looked to have a one-on-one with Princeton netminder Ben Hummel. As Hummel came out of net to play the ball, Wright tapped the ball off the keeper, collecting the rebound for an open net goal.
The Tigers would add two more insurance goals before the end with Sanner collecting the hat trick in the 59th minute and Porter putting away his second goal of the night in the 68th minute.
