Brinkofski Named Big Ten Athlete of the Week
Oct 12 | Men's Cross Country
PISCATAWAY, N.J. - Rutgers men's cross country junior Trent Brinkofski was named Big Ten Athlete of the Week, announced Wednesday by the league office. Brinkofski finished fifth overall at the Metropolitan Championships Friday at Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx, helping the Scarlet Knights place second at the event.
"It's well deserved," said head coach Mike Mulqueen. "He was the top runner for us at the Metropolitan Championships and ran a lifetime best at Van Cortlandt Park. He was the number one guy for us last week and this is a great honor for him."
The Somerset, New Jersey, native produced a personal-best five mile time of 26:26.6 for the venue during the event, contributing to RU's top team result at the Met Championships in its past seven attempts. Brinkofski finished the race with a split mile of 5:17.4.
This is the second-career conference honor for Brinkofski, who secured Big Ten Athlete of the Week accolades last fall. The recognition came after his performance at the 2015 Metropolitan Championships, where he finished seventh overall at last year's race with a time of 26:54.7.
The Scarlet Knights return to action Saturday, Oct. 15 at the Princeton Invitational in Princeton, New Jersey, before heading to Falcon Heights, Minnesota for the Big Ten Championships on Oct. 30.
