Hoosiers Hold Off Scarlet Knights in Four Sets

Box Score Oct. 14, 2016

Final Stats

BLOOMINGTON, IND. – A strong first set was not enough for the Rutgers volleyball team as the Scarlet Knights fell in four to Indiana at University Gym on Friday night. RU (4-16, 0-7 Big Ten) claimed set one by a score of 25-23 before falling to IU (13-7, 2-5 Big Ten) in the final three by scores of 11-25, 18-25, and 22-25.

Freshman middle blocker Jasmine Stackhouse matched her career-best with seven blocks to lead RU, as the Scarlet Knights led the Hoosiers 10-4 in total team blocks. Senior right sides Lauren Cloyd and Cole Trimble followed with four blocks each. Cloyd also paced the squad with seven kills in the match.

Indiana was led by Allison Hammond with a match-high 19 kills followed by Elizabeth Asdell with 11 kills of her own. Victoria Brisack added in 43 assists in the win.

Back-to-back kills for freshman right side Jillian Duffin early in the first set fueled the Scarlet Knight offense, cutting into Indiana's lead, 7-6. The Scarlet Knights soon tied up the frame, 8-8, as their momentum continued to brew. Trailing 16-13, the Scarlet Knights registered a 5-0 run ignited by Stackhouse with a kill and two block assists in the surge to give RU the lead at 18-16.

The Hoosiers responded with a 5-0 run of their own to reclaim the lead, 21-18. Five consecutive points again for RU, guided by three blocks for the defense, put the Scarlet Knights back in the lead 23-21. RU held off IU across the final serves as a Cloyd kill sealed the set one win for Rutgers.

After stumbling in the second stanza, the Scarlet Knights came back to life in the third. Despite falling behind 12-7 to start set three, RU rattled off five unanswered points to tie the score, 12-12. Junior outside hitter Meme Fletcher delivered RU's next two kills as the score stayed even at 14-14. From there, Indiana jumped back in front, 19-14. The Scarlet Knights were unable to recover from the deficit as the Hoosiers claimed a 2-1 edge in the match.

Indiana moved to an early advantage in the fourth frame. However, Rutgers pushed into the lead on back-to-back blocks, both with assistance from Trimble, to take a 10-9 lead. After eight ties and three lead changes on the board, Indiana pushed to a 22-18 lead. Rutgers kept it close with four straight points as an ace for sophomore Tiaja McKnight preceded an IU error to set the score at 22-21. A block from Trimble and McKnight held RU within one at 23-22. Despite the energy, it was not enough momentum as the Hoosiers held off the Scarlet Knights, 25-22, for the match win.
