Women's Golf Hosts Successful Unger-DeBlasio Cup

PISCATAWAY, N.J. -- Rutgers women's golf hosted its fourth annual Unger-DeBlasio Alumni Outing on Friday, Oct. 14 at the Rutgers University Golf Course. The Scarlet Knights welcomed more than 50 golfers to the 18-hole event during homecoming weekend.
Don and Penny Pray and Andy and Mariclaire Stotler captured the Unger-DeBlasio Cup, which celebrates the upcoming 40-year anniversary of the program's varsity status at the university.
The Unger-DeBlasio Cup was created to honor Jan Unger and Art DeBlasio, two former coaches of the program. Unger served as the head coach of the Scarlet Knights from 1978-95 and laid a solid foundation for the team's current success.
DeBlasio was a longtime assistant under Unger during his time at RU and worked as the head golf professional at the Rutgers Golf Course from 1966-01. DeBlasio has enjoyed more than 50 years as a member of the PGA.
The event introduced The Maura Waters-Ballard Award, honoring Rutgers' scoring champion. Junior captain Emily Mills was presented the award for the 2015 season after the Colts Neck, New Jersey, native finished with a 78.27 scoring average in the fall and a 75.57 average in the spring.
Former and current student-athletes were also recognized for their academic achievement at the outing. Mills, junior Tatum Jackson and former Scarlet Knight Christina Paulsen earned Big Ten Distinguished Scholar recognition, given to a student-athlete who produced a cumulative GPA of 3.75 or higher for the 2015-16 academic year and participated in the conference championship. Mills, Jackson and sophomore Astrid Aneman were all presented with WGCA All-American Scholar Honors, given to student-athletes who played in more than half of competitive rounds and acquired a cumulative GPA above 3.5.
Rutgers recently established an Alumnae Board, led by Danaka Olsen, Michelle Melia, and Racquel Zurick. The board's goal is to compile a complete program history in preparation for the 40th anniversary celebration in the fall of 2017.
