MINNEAPOLIS - Rutgers stormed back from an early 21-3 deficit to take a lead with four minutes to play, but Minnesota (5-2, 2-2) made a 28-yard field goal in the final seconds to grab a 34-32 win from the Scarlet Knights Saturday at TCF Bank Stadium.
Redshirt sophomore Giovanni Rescigno was 22-of-38 for 220 yards passing and three touchdowns in his first career start for RU (2-6, 0-5). Justin Goodwin had a season-high 97 rushing yards on 19 carries, finishing with 179 all-purpose yards.
Eight different receivers made at least one reception for the Scarlet Knight. Goodwin led the way with six receptions (for 52 yards), while Andre Patton had a game-high 73 yards receiving on four grabs.
After falling behind 21-3 after one frame, Rescigno rallied the visitors back with touchdown passes to Goodwin (three yards) and Patton (a 37-yard strike). Cornerback Damon Hayes intercepted Minnesota quarterback Mitch Leidner and returned it 55 yards for a touchdown with just over six minutes left in the third quarter, bringing RU within one at 24-23.
Smith took the ensuing kickoff back for a touchdown, putting the Gophers back in front at 31-23. Rutgers answered back with an 18-yard catch-and-run from redshirt freshman Jawuan Harris to get back within 31-29.
The Scarlet Knights would take their first lead of the day with four minutes remaining, as David Bonagura hit a 39-yard field goal to give the Scarlet Knights a 32-31 advantage. However, Minnesota went 59 yards in 13 plays to set up Emmit Carpenter's game-winning field goal in the waning seconds.
Defensively, Trevor Morris led RU with 15 tackles. Tyreek Maddox-Williams joined him in double digits with 10 stops and Kevin Marquez had a career-high nine tackles. Isaiah Johnson also had a key recovery of a muffed punt.
The Scarlet Knights had a 22-19 advantage over Minnesota in first downs. RU was 10 of 19 on third down.
Rutgers has its first bye week of the season coming up. They will return home to face Indiana on November 5.
