Field Hockey Closes Regular Season at No. 3 Maryland

Rutgers closes the regular season on the road Saturday, playing its final conference game at No.3 Maryland. The team will return to College Park for the Big Ten Tournament the following week.

RU enters the weekend at 9-7 overall and 2-5 in the Big Ten They are coming off a split last weekend, falling to Penn State and then shutting out Richmond 2-0. RU has gotten scoring contributions throughout their lineup, with six players between five and eight goals and eight players with double-digit points.Rutgers leads the conference and is fourth in the nation with 8.31 penalty corners per game.

Rutgers head coach Meredith Civico played for Missy Meharg at Maryland, winning a national championship in 2005. She will lead a Scarlet Knights team looking to reach double-digit victories for the first time since 2008.

A handful of Rutgers seniors are looking to establish their place on RU's all-time leaderboards. Rachel Yaney needs one more goal for sole possession of seventh place all-time, and two more points to enter the top-ten. Alyssa Bull needs three more assists for sixth place, currently sitting seventh all-time, and Sofia Walia is one assist behind her at eighth all-time. Walia is also three points from the top-ten all-time.

Maryland enters the matchup at No. 3 in the nation and 14-3 on the season. Their last three wins came over No. 8 Virginia, then-No. 1 UConn and then-No. 5 Penn State. The Terps' seven-game winning streak dates back to a loss to then-No. 11 Northwestern on Sept. 25. Their other two losses came in the opening week of the season against then-No. 2 Syracuse and then-No. 4 Duke.

Maryland is led by Welma Luus (13 goals, 30 points) and Grace Balsdon (12 goals, 28 points). If Maryland wins Saturday's game, the two teams would meet for a rematch in the Big Ten Tournament Quarterfinals Thursday in College Park, Md.

The Terrapins hold a 27-3-1 lead in the all-time series against the Scarlet Knights. Rutgers last win came in 1998, a 4-3 victory. Since the two teams became the newest members of the Big Ten Conference, Maryland has claimed a pair of 4-0 wins.
