PISCATAWAY, N.J. - Rutgers (1-0) hosts Drexel (0-1) Sunday (Nov. 13) afternoon in a 4 p.m. tip-off at the RAC in the Scarlet Knight Showcase. The contest is the first of three home games in the event. The first 500 fans will receive free, official basketball season t-shirts. The Riot Squad, the official student fan group of Rutgers University, will play a game at halftime.
Sunday's game will be televised live on BTN, with Greg Amsinger calling the action and Bob Wenzel providing the analysis. On the radio, the contest will be broadcast live on the Rutgers IMG Sports Network, WOR 710 AM in New York and WCTC 1450 AM in New Brunswick. Chris Carlin will serve as play-by-play announcer and Joe Boylan will provide commentary. WRSU (88.7) will also broadcast the game.
Rutgers and Drexel have met 15 times on the collegiate hardwood, with the Scarlet Knights holding a 13-2 advantage. The Dragons, however, have won two of the past three meetings. Rutgers is 12-2 all-time at home versus DU and 4-2 at the RAC. The last match-up occurred on Nov. 19, 2013 at the RAC in the NIT Preseason Tip-Off, with Drexel capturing a 70-59 victory. Four players registered double figures for the Dragons, with their bench out-scoring the RU reserves by a 24-13 measure.
Steve Pikiell led Rutgers to an 86-57 win over Molloy Friday evening at the RAC to signal the largest margin of victory ever for RU men's basketball in a head coaching debut. The 29-point win was the most sizable for the Scarlet Knights in a season opener since defeating Bentley 100-60 at the College Avenue Gym on December 1, 1975.
Four players scored in double figures, including Deshawn Freeman, who had a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds. The redshirt junior team captain was 5-of-10 from the field to aid a 48.3 percent (29-of-60) shooting performance, while also issuing three blocks.
RU led from the opening tip to the final buzzer largely due to a defensive effort that limited Molloy to 38 percent (19-of-50) shooting. Fourteen players saw action, contributing to a 43-11 differential in bench points. Of those players, six were competing in their initial game in a Scarlet Knight uniform.
Colonial Athletic Association member Drexel, under the leadership of first-year head coach Zach Spiker, dropped a 78-65 decision at Monmouth Friday night. The Dragons were limited to 31.7 percent (20-of-63) shooting and were out-scored 40-16 in the paint. Freshman guard Kurk Lee was 6-of-12 from the field to score 17 points in his first collegiate game. Senior forward Rodney Williams was a preseason All-CAA Honorable Mention selection.
