PISCATAWAY, N.J. - Midfielder Tim McQuaid was named to the Big Ten All-Freshmen Team and Ross Tetro was recognized with the conference's Sportsmanship Award, it was announced on Friday by the conference office on the eve of the Big Ten Men's Soccer Tournament
In his first season "On the Banks", McQuaid appeared in all 16 regular season games with 13 starts.
The Rosewell, Georgia native collected his first career goal against Penn State, forcing overtime with the Nittany Lions. McQuaid tapped in the ball at the goal line with 1:52 remaining in regulation to knot the score at 1-1.
Earlier in the season, McQuaid also helped RU rally against No. 15 Florida Gulf Coast. The Scarlet Knights overcame an early 5-0 deficit with McQuaid assisting on RU's final goal of the game to bring Rutgers to within one, 6-5, with 12 minutes remaining. The freshman set up the score with a serve into the box resulting in teammate Jason Wright earning his second career hat trick.
McQuaid is the third Scarlet Knight to earn Big Ten All-Freshmen honors joining Brian Hawkins, who was selected to the team in 2015, and Wright, who was a 2014 honoree.
Tetro was RU's recipient of the Big Ten Sportsmanship Award. The Sportsmanship Award is given to individuals who have distinguished themselves through sportsmanship and ethical behavior. These students-athletes must also be in good academic standing and have demonstrated good citizenship outside of the sports-competition setting.
A redshirt senior hailing from Freehold, New Jersey, started all 11 of his appearances in 2016 and has made starts in 64 of his 65 career appearances.
Tetro was named to Top Drawer Soccer's Team of the Week after a goal line save to deny No. 4 Indiana from netting a golden goal in closing moments of the first overtime in eventual 0-0 draw with the Hoosiers. Tetro also appeared on SportsCenter's Top Ten Plays of the Day on Sept. 13 after making a goal line save against then-No. 4 Maryland to force overtime.
The Rutgers men's soccer team opens Big Ten Tournament play with No. 8 Michigan in the play-in game on Saturday, Nov. 4. Kickoff is slated for 1 p.m. and the game will be streamed live on BTN Plus.
