PISCATAWAY, N.J. - Rutgers (6-17, 0-10) takes flight for the Cornhusker State to meet Nebraska (12-11, 4-6) in a 2 p.m. ET tip-off on Saturday. The contest will feature two of the conference's top freshmen guards in RU point Corey Sanders and Nebraska combo Glynn Watson, Jr. Sanders leads the B1G in steals (1.64) and is first among freshmen in scoring (15.4), while ranking second in assists (4.14). Watson, Jr. is third in steals (1.26) and fourth in assists (2.39) among freshmen. Over the last six games, Sanders is averaging 21.0 points, 6.0 assists and 4.2 rebounds in 38.9 minutes.
The Scarlet Knights will be working to return to the win column and earn their first B1G road victory, while the Huskers will be looking to snap a three-game skid.
The game will be televised live on ESPNU with Clay Matvick calling the action and Sean Harrington providing the analysis. On the radio, the contest will be broadcast live on the Rutgers IMG Sports Network, WOR 710 AM in New York & WCTC 1450 AM in New Brunswick. Chris Carlin will serve as play-by-play announcer and Joe Boylan will provide commentary. WRSU (88.7 FM) will also broadcast the game.
The game will mark the sixth meeting on the collegiate hardwood between Rutgers and Nebraska with the Huskers leading 3-2. The Cornhuskers won the last three meetings, including a 90-56 decision at the RAC on Jan. 9. Mike Williams scored 22 points, but the Scarlet Knights were unable to overcome a substantial size disadvantage and were out-rebounded 43-25. Last season, Nebraska captured a 65-49 victory at Pinnacle Bank Arena. The Scarlet Knights last defeated Nebraska, 75-73, at the RAC on Dec. 2, 2006, with Rutgers shooting an impressive 63.6 percent (28-of-44). The first meeting occurred on Nov. 28, 1999 at the USBWA Hoops 6 Quill Classic in St. Charles, Mo., and resulted in an 81-62 RU victory.
Sanders set a school freshman record with 39 points in a 110-101 triple overtime home loss to Illinois on Wednesday. He also set a career-high with 12 assists, while tying the school record with 33 field goal attempts. His helpers were the second most by a freshman in the NCAA this season, while his shot attempts ranked as the second most by a player thus far in 2015-16. Sanders also set career-bests in rebounds (eight) and minutes played (51), while posting his first career-double-double. Sanders, who made a three-pointer at the buzzer that was No. 1 on the ESPN Top 10 to send the game into double overtime, was boosted by fellow rookie Jonathan Laurent, who posted a career-best 23 points, while playing 50 minutes. It marked the first time in RU history that two freshman posted 20 or more points in a game.
Nebraska, under the leadership of fourth-year head coach Tim Miles, suffered a 70-65 home loss to No. 4/3 Maryland on Wednesday in a game that featured eight ties and nine lead changes. The Huskers took 66 shots, but made just 31.8 percent, while the Terps made 51 percent (25-of-49) of their field goal attempts. Three players average double figures in scoring for Nebraska, including Andrew White III with a team-best 17.0 points-per-game.
