PISCATAWAY, N.J. - Two former Scarlet Knights have signed USL contracts this week. Mitch Lurie (Atlanta, Ga.) has signed with St. Louis FC, while Mitchell Taintor (Storrs, Conn.) joins Toronto FC II.
"We are very happy for these guys. Both Mitchell Taintor and Mitch Lurie did fantastic jobs for us at Rutgers and both have some great qualities to play for a long time," said head coach Dan Donigan. "It's a strong league, so for both these guys to earn a first team contract speaks to the hard work they have put in. Our staff knows they will be able to prove their value as players and professional on and off the field within the franchises and the communities. Our entire program wishes them well going forward."
Lurie was a third round draft pick by the Philadelphia Union in the 2016 MLS SuperDraft. A Second Team NSCAA All-Region and Second Team All-Big Ten honoree, Lurie led Rutgers with six assists and helped bolster a Scarlet Knight defense that produced eight shutouts last fall. RU's eight shutouts were the most by the Scarlet Knights since the 1998 season. The Scarlet Knight co-captain was also named to the Central New York Classic All-Tournament Team.
Taintor was a third round draft pick by Toronto FC in the 2016 SuperDraft. In his four years at Rutgers, Taintor collected 32 points (13G, 6A), including five game-winning goals, and appeared in 71 games with 67 starts. A Second Team NSCAA All-Region and Second Team All-Big Ten selection, the RU co-captain captured 15 points (5G, 5A) for the Scarlet Knights in 2015.
