Video: RU Goals

COLLEGE PARK, Md. (April 16, 2016) -
No. 16 Rutgers men's lacrosse led by three goals in the second half on the road, but a seven-goal streak pushed No. 4 Maryland (9-2, 3-0 Big Ten) to a 11-8 victory in front of 4,101 fans at Capital One Field at Maryland Stadium. Jules Heningburg had four goals and an assist to lead the Scarlet Knights (9-3, 2-1 Big Ten) with five points.

"I thought we had a great trip down here," head coach Brian Brecht said. "To start off with the success we had, a 4-3 lead at halftime, and then come out of halftime with two quick ones to go up 6-3, that was a great effort by our guys. They fought back and it was a one-goal game in the fourth quarter. Maryland's a top-five team and give them credit for making plays in a tight game in the fourth quarter."

Maryland outshot Rutgers 44-30 and held a 32-19 advantage on ground balls. The Terrapins capitalized on winning 15-of-23 faceoffs, including 10-of-14 in the second half to control possession. Kris Alleyne had a game-high 13 saves.

Rutgers struck first, scoring just under five minutes into the game. Heningburg found a cutting Christian Mazzone right in front of the cage, and he slammed it home for the game's first tally. Maryland countered with an unassisted goal, to re-tie the game, but that only lasted for 89 seconds. RU came back as Heningburg wrapped around the net and scored to put the Scarlet Knights ahead 2-1, which would be the margin at the end of 15 minutes.

UMD evened the game just 43 seconds into the second quarter, as Matt Rambo scored his 20th of the season. They took a 3-2 lead at the 8:28 mark, picking up a ground ball off a shot that rang the post and finishing.

Heningburg single-handedly pushed Rutgers back in front, scoring the next two goals. At 7:16 of the second quarter he finished off a feed from Scott Bieda, then two minutes later launched a laser from the left side to put RU ahead 4-3 heading into halftime.

In the second half, it took just 39 seconds for Rutgers to extend their lead. Chad Toliver launched from long distance into the back of the net to put RU in front 5-3. Then RU went on the extra-man, and Josh Jordan fired in a goal to give the visitors a three-goal lead at 6-3.

However, Maryland countered with a four goal run to take their first lead of the game. The Terrapins scored four times in a span of 5:45 to go in front at 7-6.

The Terps continued the scoring in the final stanza, increasing their lead to 10-6 with a total of seven consecutive goals. Heningburg's fourth tally of the day broke that streak with 6:02 remaining. Adam Charalmbides scored the final Rutgers goal, but the home team held on for an 11-8 victory.

Next up for the Scarlet Knights is the home finale against Penn State. The game will starts at 8 p.m. on Friday night and air on Big Ten Network. It is Senior Day and Alumni Appreciation Day. Tickets are still available for purchase here.
