BETHLEHEM, Pa. - With Rutgers women's lacrosse needing a spark Tuesday night at Ulrich Sports Complex, Kristina Dunphey (Hillsborough, N.J.) stepped up. The junior midfielder scored a second half hat trick, while on the other end goalkeeper Bianca Dente (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) made save after save to keep RU in it.
But Lehigh (9-2, 3-1) did not break defensively, holding the Scarlet Knights (3-9, 0-1) off the board in the final 17 minutes of play amid numerous scoring opportunities to prevail, 9-5. Lehigh goalkeeper Taylor Tvedt, who made eight saves overall, stopped five shots after three-straight Dunphey scores to seal the win.
Dente played the full time and made nine saves, with five coming in the final 21 minutes of the game to allow for the comeback bid.
Lehigh controlled the opening half by holding Rutgers to just two goals on five shots for an 8-2 advantage. Senior Kim Kolodny (Farmingdale, N.Y.) got the Scarlet Knights on the board first before rookie Abbey Brooks (Moorestown, N.J.) tallied another RU goal on the free position.
Lehigh has held the opposition to seven or fewer goals seven times this season and entered Tuesday's game ranked No. 11 nationally in GAA.
The Scarlet Knights host No. 1 Maryland (10-0, 1-0) on Saturday, April 9 at High Point Solutions Stadium as the schedule shifts to Big Ten opponents. Three of RU's final four games will be played in Piscataway.
