ON THE ROAD AGAIN
The Scarlet Knights keep up Big Ten play as they head to Columbus, Ohio to meet the Ohio State Buckeyes on Sunday at 2 p.m.
Rutgers is coming off a double overtime thriller against No. 4 Maryland on Tuesday night, with the Terps taking a 2-1 victory with six minutes left in regulation.
Maryland took an early 1-0 lead off a penalty kick, but RU netted the equalizer in the 27th minute of play. Junior Dante Perez, from off the bench, played a clear off a Scarlet Knight corner kick into the back of the Terp net for his first career tally and RU's first score of the season.
The defense made several huge stops including eight saves by goalkeeper David Greczek, tying his season-high, and stops at the goal line by seniors Ross Tetro and Tyler Morris.
ABOUT OHIO STATE
Ohio State, last season's Big Ten regular season champions, entered the season ranked at No. 18 and are looking for momentum after opening the year at 1-5 overall and 1-1 in conference play.
After snapping a four-game skid, including a trio of double overtime contests, with a 1-0 Big Ten opening victory over Northwestern, the Buckeyes fell 4-2 at Penn State on Tuesday night.
Abdi Mohamed, Nate Kohl, Austin Bergstrom and Ben Fitzpatrick have all registered a goal for Ohio State this season.
In goal, Parker Siegfried is holding down a 1.58 goals against average and .615 save percentage.
LAST TIME VS. OHIO STATE - REGULAR SEASON
The Rutgers men's soccer team took over first place in the Big Ten standings for the first time in school history and won its sixth-straight game in an eventual seven-game win streak with a 1-0 victory over No. 18 Ohio State on Oct. 25 at Yurcak Field. RU's win also snapped the Buckeye's school-record eight-game win streak.
Jason Wright scored the game-winner in the 74th minute of action taking a rebound off a saved shot by Miles Hackett into the back of the Buckeye net. The Scarlet Knight defense, meanwhile, earned its second straight and sixth shutout of the season.
Rutgers played a throw-in from the far side of the field where midfielder Erik Sa found Wright at the top of the 18. With one tap, Wright got the ball to Hackett surging into the box for an attempt from six-yards out to the right post. Ohio State keeper Chris Froschauer made the deflection, but the ball bounced to his left leaving Wright a wide open look on goal.
Goalkeeper David Greczek made five saves in the victory, giving the junior Scarlet Knight his 13th career shutout. Froschauer made eight stops in the loss.
LAST TIME VS. OHIO STATE - B1G SEMIFINALS
The Rutgers men's soccer team's Big Ten Tournament run came to an end in the semifinals on Nov. 13 at an extremely windy Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium, as the fourth seeded Scarlet Knights fell 4-0 to top seed and host Ohio State.
The Buckeyes struck less than a minute into the contest. From the right side of the 18, Marcus McCrary crossed the ball to the top of the box. Rather than shooting, Yaw Amankwa elected to pass behind him to Abdi Mohamed, who found an opening to fire on the Scarlet Knight goal for the 1-0 lead 57 seconds into the contest.
Ohio State went ahead 2-0 in the 20th minute as Hunter Robertson found Danny Jensen to send a header under the crossbar.
Big Ten goalkeeper of the Year, Chris Froschauer , saved both RU's chances on goal in the first half.
Just prior to the Buckeye's second goal, the Scarlet Knights had their first attempt on goal. Niel Guzman fed Big Ten Offensive Player of the Year Jason Wright from the left side box, but Wright's look landed in Froschauer's hands.
All-Big Ten Freshman Team member Brian Hawkins came off the bench for RU's other shot of the opening stanza. His header at the front of the Buckeye net was another Froschauer stop
Ohio State added in two second half goals coming at opposite ends of the second half. The Buckeyes captured its third goal right after the second stanza's opening whistle and added in its final tally in the closing minutes of the game.
The wind dramatically affected the Scarlet Knights looks on the Buckeye net in the second half with gusts taking the ball wide on several occasions.
Among RU's best chances were a shot by JP Correa forcing Froschauer to leap up in the air to make the stop and a free kick by Mitchell Taintor blocked by a wall of Ohio State defenders at the top of the box, both midway through the second half.
The Buckeyes outshot Rutgers, 11-10, while the Scarlet Knights held a 5-4 edge in corners. Hawkins led Rutgers with a pair of shots, both on goal.
Rutgers netminder David Greczek ended the afternoon with four saves. Froschauer made five saves in the shutout.
