PISCATAWAY, N.J. - Junior Emily Mills is atop the leaderboard with a 145 (74-71) total after the opening two rounds of the 12-team Rutgers Invitational, played Friday at the Rutgers University Golf Course. The Scarlet Knights are in second place with a 618 (312-306) entering the final 18 holes.
"We showed some nerves in our first round and got off to a slow start to begin the day," said Rutgers head coach Kari Williams. "I am happy with the way the team handled itself, as the course played difficult. I watched us play some good golf and we are excited about competing for the title in the final round."
Mills registered a tournament-best nine birdies with 20 pars and was two-under on par five's on the par 72, 6,041-yard course. She is three strokes ahead of Delaware's Ariane Klotz in the effort to capture the Scarlet Knights' first individual title at the Rutgers Invitational since 2011.
"I was really excited to get our season started here at home," said Mills. "I came out on the first hole and hit my approach to three feet, leading to a birdie and setting the tone for my day. Tomorrow's round will be challenging but I know the entire team is looking forward to it."
Redshirt sophomore Ashleigh Greenham, competing in her first event for RU after transferring from Arizona State, is tied for sixth in the 70-player field with a 152 (76-76) total to join Mills in the top 10. She is an event-best minus three in par three scoring and has five birdies.
Freshman Ana Cortes, sophomore Astrid Aneman and junior Tatum Jackson comprise the rest of the Scarlet scorecard. Cortes is tied for 23rd with a 159 (83-76), Aneman is tied for 34th with a 162 (79-83) and Jackson is tied for 58th with a 174 (88-86). Cortes has 20 pars thus far in her collegiate debut.
Senior Maddy Gedeon, playing in her first event since last Fall's RU Invite, is competing as an individual and is 62nd with a 176 (94-82).
Delaware, buoyed by five players among the top eleven, leads the event with a 611 (313-298). Sacred Heart is in third place with 628.
The third and final round of the 54-hole Invitational tees-off Saturday morning at 7:45 a.m. Results will be available at the conclusion.
