PISCATAWAY, N.J. - Emily Mills carded a 220 (74-71-75) to win the 70-player Rutgers Invitational, played Friday and Saturday at the Rutgers University Golf Course, by six strokes. Propelled by the captain's performance, the Scarlet Knights placed second in the 12-team field with a 934 (312-306-316) total.
"Finishing runner-up is a good start to our season," said Rutgers head coach Kari Williams. "We expect to compete for the title in every event we enter. Emily played at a high level this weekend and we are all very proud of her performance."
Mills registered nine birdies with 35 pars and was two-under on par five's on the par 72, 6,041-yard course. Her second round 71 was the only under par round of the event. The victory marked the junior's second collegiate win and the Scarlet Knights' first individual title at the Rutgers Invitational since 2011.
"This was a really exciting way to start the season," said Mills. "I've been working towards my second career win and to earn it at home is pretty special. Our team played well to finish in second place and we are optimistic about the rest of the season."
Redshirt sophomore Ashleigh Greenham, competing in her first event for RU after transferring from Arizona State, tied for 13th with a 233 (76-76-81) total. She was an event-best minus one in par three scoring and had eight birdies.
Freshman Ana Cortes, sophomore Astrid Aneman and junior Tatum Jackson comprised the rest of the Scarlet scorecard. Cortes finished 23rd with a 239 (83-76-80), Aneman tied for 32nd with a 242 (79-83-80) and Jackson tied for 55th with a 257 (88-86-83). Cortes had 30 pars in her collegiate debut.
Senior Maddy Gedeon, playing in her first event since last Fall's RU Invite, competed as an individual and placed 65th with a 270 (94-82-94).
Delaware, buoyed by four players among the top 10, won its second consecutive Rutgers Invitational title, carding a 919 (313-298-308). St. John's finished third with a 937.
"We appreciate the support we received from all of our volunteers and spectators, as this is our only home event of the year," said Williams. "It created a fantastic atmosphere for the teams."
The Scarlet Knights return to the links at the Nittany Lion Invitational in State College, Pa., September 24-25.
