Game Notes
PISCATAWAY, N.J. - Rutgers field hockey returns home this week to begin a three-game homestand after playing three of its first four games on the road. The Scarlet Knights will welcome Ohio University on Thursday afternoon, and face off against Cornell on Sunday.
Rutgers holds a 2-2 record through its first four games. The squad split a pair of games on a trip through Virginia last weekend, first taking No. 5 UVA to overtime for the second time in three years, then defeating William and Mary 2-1. Senior Sarah Regn and freshman Nikki Santore tallied for RU Friday, with senior Shevaun Hayes recording 12 saves, her fifth career game with double-digit stops. On Sunday, senior Sofia Walia scored two goals to push RU to a victory. It was her second career two-goal game, with both coming against William and Mary.
Rutgers will face Ohio for the fourth time lifetime, holding a 2-1 series lead. Last season, Rutgers defeated the Bobcats 2-1 on a neutral field in East Lansing, Michigan. The Scarlet Knights got goals from returners Rachel Yaney and Jade Dixon in the game. The Thursday matchup represents the first time that RU will play on a Thursday since 2012. After the game, fans can receive postgame autographs from the team and team posters will be given away.
Ohio enters the matchup at 1-3. After opening the season with a win over Saint Francis, they have lost three straight, including games against Big Ten foes Indiana (3-2 in overtime) and Ohio State (3-0). Kendall Ballard leads the team with five points and Lina Trucco is the starter between the pipes with a 2.92 goals-against-average.
Sunday sees a matchup against Cornell, a team that has started the season 2-0, with a pair of shutout victories, over Colgate (5-0) and Lehigh (4-0). Kate Fitzpatrick has a team-high three goals, while Kelly Johnson starts in net and hasn't allowed a shot in yet. The Ivy League squad will first face Ohio on Friday in a neutral site matchup in Piscataway. Rutgers leads the all-time series with the Big Red 5-3, including winning the last three games, the last of which came in 2012. The September 11 matchup will be Military Appreciation Day, with red, white and blue Block R t-shirts given away.
