CHAMPAIGN, Ill. - Rutgers gymnastics scored best on balance beam on the way to a 191.125 team score Saturday in front of 1,014 fans inside Huff Hall. Host Illinois took first in the meet with a 195.900, with Eastern Michigan (194.725), RU and Illinois-Chicago (190.850) placing behind in the quad meet.
"We had some strong individual performances," sixth-year head coach Louis Levine said. "Libby had another good all-around appearance and Micki led us on bars and beam. Ray also did a nice job. Overall, as a team we have to be a lot better than we were today."
After scoring a 47.950 in the season opener on balance beam, Rutgers improved to 48.475 in the event in the second rotation. Junior Makenzey Shank led the way with a 9.825, the highest score by a Scarlet Knight on the day. Senior Claire Jones also contributed a 9.775 to match her score from last week, while junior Libby Groden (9.675) and sophomore Riahanah Ali (9.650) both hit their routine.
Moving to floor exercise, Ali notched a 9.750 and Groden added a 9.725 to help RU pick up a 46.625. The Scarlet Knights finished the meet with a 48.100 on vault, as freshman Chloe DeVries recorded a second-straight 9.750 to highlight the rotation.
Shank picked up a 9.775 on uneven bars to lead the team in a second event. Sophomore Michelle Amoresano also went over 9.700 with a 9.725 on the way to a 47.925 total.
Groden and DeVries both went all-around once again, scoring a 38.725 and 37.025, respectively.
Rutgers will return home to host Nebraska, Brown and West Chester in a quad meet next Saturday at 7 p.m. inside the Livingston Gym.
