COLUMBUS, Ohio - Bringing its momentum to the road, Rutgers gymnastics had four 9.800 scores on floor exercise to help the team to a 194.300 Saturday at Ohio State. The Buckeyes picked up a 195.775, as the meet was part of a co-ed competition inside St. John Arena with the OSU men's gymnastics squad taking on Michigan at the same time.
"We started off a little tight today on bars, but I thought our confidence grew as the meet went on," head coach Louis Levine said. "We showed a lot of fight and that's something that's going to help us this season."
A quartet of 9.800 scores on floor exercise propelled the Scarlet Knights to a 48.925 in the third rotation. Junior Libby Groden and sophomore Jenna Rizkalla both hit at least that mark for the third-straight week, while senior Claire Jones and sophomore Michelle Amoresano also achieved the grade. Freshman Chloe DeVries rounded out the team total with a 9.725 performance.
"Floor was great and definitely our best event today," Levine said. "Michelle had a great meet in the all-around and did a new first pass on floor, which was excellent."
It was only the second career all-around performance for Amoresano, who scored a 38.800. She tied for the team lead with a 9.750 on vault and notched a 9.700 on uneven bars in addition to the 9.800 on floor exercise to highlight the day. Groden also did all four events and finished with a 38.250, including a second-place finish after a 9.850 on balance beam.
The team compiled a 48.600 on beam overall, adding a 9.750 by both Jones and freshman Polina Poliakova to Groden's 9.850. Senior April Baker worked to a 9.700 in the event.
The Scarlet Knights started on uneven bars and were led by a 9.775 from junior Makenzey Shank. In addition, freshman Erin McLachlan contributed a 9.725 in only her second collegiate meet. RU swung to a 48.325 as a unit.
Amoresano, Groden and Jones all earned a 9.750 on vault in the second rotation to help Rutgers to a 48.450.
RU will return to the Livingston Gym next Saturday to host Maryland, Penn and Yale in a 7 p.m. meet. It will be the final home regular season meet for the Scarlet Knights, as the program will honor its three seniors.
