Women’s Soccer Shuts Out No. 13 Penn State in 0-0 Draw

Scarlet Knights post 11th shutout of the season

PISCATAWAY, N.J. – No. RV/24 Rutgers women's soccer blanked No. 13/12 Penn State in a 0-0 double overtime draw on Friday night at Yurcak Field. It marked the Scarlet Knights 11th shutout of the season.

"It's good to get back to getting shutouts. It is something we emphasize in this program," said redshirt junior goalkeeper Casey Murphy. "It says a lot about our defense to shut out a very good Penn State team. We worked on it in practice all week, worked on having good habits and denying all shots and services. I think we did well with that today."

Rutgers (9-2-4, 3-2-3 Big Ten) and Penn State (9-3-2, 5-12 Big Ten) played an even battle on the field. The Scarlet Knights led in shots (13-12), while the Nittany Lions took the edge in corners (9-5).

Murphy registered two saves in the draw, as the RU defense held a strong PSU offense to just two shots on goal across the contest.

The Scarlet Knights outshot the Nittany Lions, 4-1, across the first 23 minutes of play. Senior forward Colby Ciarrocca found a great look in the 23rd minute, as the shot just hit the top cross bar.

After Rutgers held possession throughout the start of the game, the contest began to even out through the remainder of the first half. Overall, the solid defenses paired with strong attacking offenses would result in a fast pace rhythm on the field. The teams continued to trade shots and possession, locking the match into a stalemate well into the final seconds of the second overtime period.

With just seconds left on the clock, PSU's Emily Ogle notched a powerful rolling shot, but Murphy was there to make the stop to seal the clean sheet.

Up next, Rutgers welcomes No. 12/15 Ohio State for a 1 p.m. match on Sunday. The contest marks Senior Day as the Scarlet Knights will honor Ciarrocca, Murphy, Christy Monroy, Courtney Norton and Brianna Scarola.
