More than 80 participants enjoy event at Rutgers University Golf Course
PISCATAWAY, N.J. - Rutgers men's golf held its inaugural Hackberry Invitational Friday at the Rutgers University Golf Course. Alumni, donors, faculty and current members of the program participated in the 18-hole event to celebrate the 80th year of Rutgers men's golf.
The Hackberry is not only named after the most challenging and No. 1 handicapped ninth hole at the golf course, but embodies the qualities of the program, as the Hackberry tree is known for its' perseverance and ability to survive the harshest of conditions.
.
Prior to the start of play, Director of Athletics Pat Hobbs addressed the crowd of more than 80 participants.
"I want to thank coach, his staff and the team," Hobbs said. "They have worked incredibly hard, and for those who follow our golf team closely, you know that we're trending upward. I also want to thank our letterwinners who have come back for this event. We're glad you're back here, glad you're a part of this and we hope you'll be apart of it moving forward."
Play was contested under USGA rules and featured live scoring, as both gross and net scores were kept. Special events during the Hackberry included the longest drive on hole four, closest to the pin on holes eight, 14 and 17, and "Beat Coach" on hole three, as participants attempted to get closer to the pin than assistant coach Austin Eoff.
"To see the number of alumni we had come back enjoy the day was spectacular," said head coach Rob Shutte. "Our current players were able to speak with past players, so it was pretty cool to see that happen. This is an event that will continue to grow with the spirit of Rutgers golf behind it."
Participants closed out the invitational with dinner and drinks in the pavilion of the golf course. Shutte awarded prizes to winners in different categories, and a raffle was held for various men's golf apparel and accessories.
Rutgers has registered back-to-back, top-three finishes in its' last two outings of the fall, including its second-place result at the Georgetown Intercollegiate on Oct. 17 in Beallsville, Maryland. The Scarlet Knights close out their 2017 fall campaign at the Kiawah Classic from Oct. 30-31 in Kiawah, South Carolina.
