PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Rutgers women's soccer improved to No. 23 in the latest United Soccer Coaches Poll. Additionally, the Scarlet Knights are also ranked No. 20 by Soccer America, No. 22 by TopDrawerSoccer.com, while sitting at No. 12 in the NCAA Women's Soccer RPI.
Rutgers (12-2-5, 6-2-3) improved two spots following a 1-0 victory over Michigan in the regular season finale and a double-overtime draw with then-No. 11 Penn State in the Big Ten Tournament quarterfinals.
Redshirt junior Casey Murphy, the 2017 Big Ten Goalkeeper of the Year, registered seven saves across regulation and two overtime periods with the Nittany Lions to send the contest into a shootout. RU dropped a heartbreaking battle in penalty kicks, which entered extra rounds to determine who would advance in the tournament.
Last Wednesday, freshman Alaysia Lane scored the game winner in the regular season finale with the Wolverines. Lane earned her first career Big Ten Freshman of the Week honors following the performance. The victory helped the Scarlet Knights secure a home quarterfinal match in the Big Ten Tournament, also marking the fourth straight season RU competed in the tournament.
Overall, Murphy leads the nation with 15 shutouts, while ranking third in the NCAA in GAA (0.247) and second in save percentage (.929). The Scarlet Knights top the nation with a team shutout percentage of .789.
Rutgers awaits selection for the 2017 NCAA Division I Women's Soccer Championship. The selection show is set to air on Monday, Nov. 6 at 4:30 p.m. ET.
