Cochrane drops three-set thriller in “C” Flight championship match
ANNAPOLIS, Md. (Oct. 8, 2017) – Rutgers tennis concluded the Blue & Gold Invitational at Navy on Sunday with a runner-up singles finish and a consolation winner.
Sophomore Jaci Cochrane wrapped up a successful weekend with second place hardware in the Singles "C" Flight. She suffered her lone singles loss of the weekend in the championship match on Sunday in arguably one of the most compelling matches of the whole weekend. Cochrane took the first set from UConn's Jacque Lazaro, 6-3, but Lazaro bounced back in the second for a 7-5 rebound win to force a third set superbreaker. In the race to 10 points, win by two, the final set went back and forth before Lazaro strung together a few late points to take the superbreaker 10-7, and claim the flight title.
Cochrane went 3-1 in singles action at the U.S. Naval Academy and 1-1 in doubles. The sophomore is now 4-3 in singles matches this fall.
Sophomore Kat Muzik claimed the consolation final in the "B" flight singles draw in an all-Rutgers matchup. Muzik topped senior teammate Chloe Lee, 8-4, in a pro-set for her third straight win of the weekend. Muzik's first match of the invitational was in the quarterfinals, where she dropped a three-set result to flight runner-up, Carlee Conway of Navy. Muzik then won two consolation matches to meet her teammate on Sunday. The sophomore stands at 5-2 in singles play this season and is tied for the team lead in wins.
Freshman Maya Jacobs fell in the "A" Flight consolation to Howard's Nathalie Finch by a score of 8-4.
A few Scarlet Knights are scheduled for Rutgers' next date on the fall schedule, the ITA Mideast Regional Championships from Oct. 18-23 in Philadelphia. The whole squad is back in action for the Buffalo Invitational from Nov. 3-5.
