Harte connects for two field goals
UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – Rutgers football (4-6, 3-4) took a 6-0 lead with 11:16 remaining in the second quarter, but No. 14 Penn State (8-2, 5-2) scored five-straight touchdowns to claim a 35-6 victory in a Big Ten East matchup on Saturday at Beaver Stadium. The Scarlet Knights entered the contest having won three of their previous four conference games.
Senior Robert Martin, a native of Harrisburg, Pa., picked up 53 rushing yards, while fifth-year senior Gus Edwards added 43 yards on the ground. Junior Giovanni Rescigno competed seven passes and ran for a team-high 57 rushing yards in his fifth start of the season. Defensively, junior Deonte Roberts collected nine tackles.
As a team, the Scarlet Knights out-rushed the Nittany Lions, 157-90. In addition, the offense permitted only one sack, making it one or less sacks allowed in 9-of-10 games this season.
Rutgers won the opening coin toss and elected to defer the option until the start of the second half, with the kickoff unit taking the field first. Freshman Justin Davidovicz lofted the opening boot into free space around the 15-yard line that landed untouched. Being a live ball, redshirt freshman Lawrence Stevens recovered the football to give the Scarlet Knights possession. That would lead to a 33-yard field goal by fifth-year senior Andrew Harte.
The defense held the 3-0 early advantage with two stops. That included a sack by junior Jon Bateky and six-yard loss on a rushing play by freshman CJ Onyechi.
RU then took back the ball with on its own 35 with 4:01 left in the opening quarter and went on a 15-play, 57-yard drive over 7:45. It was the longest drive by plays and time this season for the Scarlet Knights. Redshirt freshman Mohamed Jabbie collected his first career reception for 12 yards on a third-and-nine play to extend the drive. The sequence would end with a 25-yard field goal by Harte.
From there, Penn State quarterback Trace McSorley scored a 20-yard rushing touchdown to put the home team on the board. McSorley added a 22-yard scoring pass to DaeSean Hamilton to make it 14-6 at halftime. The Nittany Lions added three touchdowns in the second half to pull away.
Rutgers will return to the road next Saturday to face Indiana at Memorial Stadium. The game will start at noon on Big Ten Network.
