NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J. (Dec. 6, 2017) – The Big Ten Conference recognized six Rutgers volleyball student-athletes on the Fall 2017 Academic All-Big Ten list, announced by the league office on Wednesday.
"I am extremely proud of our players that have been recognized for their outstanding efforts in the classroom," said head coach CJ Werneke. "It also demonstrates their pursuit for excellence both academically and athletically. With the support of academic advisor Monique Brown, our players have embodied the definition of a student-athlete."
To be eligible for Academic All-Big Ten selection, students must be on a varsity team, as verified by being on the official squad list as of November 1 for fall sports, who have been enrolled fulltime at the institution for a minimum of 12 months and carry a cumulative grade-point average of 3.0 or higher.
Seniors Meme Fletcher and Talia Holze highlight the list by completing the clean sweep, achieving Academic All-Big Ten in all three seasons in which they were eligible. Senior Brooke Enners earns a second consecutive mention on the academic honor roll, while sophomores Galia Nankin, Megan Sharkey and Karysa Swackenberg all make the grade in their first eligible seasons.
The Scarlet Knights won two non-conference tournaments this season, claiming the ECU Invitational in North Carolina to open the season, and capturing the Robert Morris Invitational title to close out the non-conference schedule in mid-September. Swackenberg was Rutgers' recipient of the Big Ten's Sportsmanship Award in November.
