PISCATAWAY, N.J. - At a meet celebrating its senior class, Rutgers gymnastics put up season highs on both balance beam and vault to record a 194.150 Saturday night at the Livingston Gym. The Scarlet Knights topped Yale (193.050) and Penn (190.825), while Maryland took first with a 195.050.
"I thought we had a lot of positive things today," head coach Louis Levine said. "We took a step in a direction that we really like. There were some major mistakes we unfortunately could not come back from. But that was the best vault we've done this year, had some really great bar routines, just not enough of them. I thought beam was good and floor wasn't our best, but we fought from the beginning to the end. Overall, we have to keep getting better to reach our goals."
Following the fourth rotation, the program honored its three seniors in a ceremony. The trio of April Baker, Claire Jones and Charly Santagado all took the stage at the Livingston Gym for the final time.
Starting off on vault, Rutgers had four scores over 9.700 with sophomore Michelle Amoresano leading the way with a 9.800. Freshman Chloe DeVries added a 9.775, while Jones picked up a 9.750 and junior Libby Groden notched a 9.725 to help the lineup to a 48.725.
Baker highlighted the uneven bars rotation with a 9.775, with Groden following behind with a 9.725. Overall, RU finished with a 47.925 in the event.
Over on the balance beam, the Scarlet Knights earned the top three scores in the meet. Junior Makenzey Shank led all gymnasts with a 9.850 and Jones hit with a 9.825 right before. Groden registered a tie for third as the leadoff by scoring a 9.775. In addition, freshman Polina Poliakova matched her career high with a 9.750, as the team collected a 48.850. It was the highest mark of the four teams in the event.
The floor exercise lineup followed with a 48.650 to close the night. Groden paced the group with a 9.775 and Jones added a 9.750. Both Amoresano and sophomore Jenna Rizkalla brought in a 9.725 to round out the high scores.
In the all-around competition, Groden scored a 39.000 to take first place overall in the meet. It was the seventh time in her career reaching at least the 39.000 mark. Amoresano also competed on all four events and collected a 38.450.
Saturday marked the fourth home meet in six outings to start the season for the Scarlet Knights. The attendance of 947 established the 10th consecutive sellout at the venue. In addition, the teams and fans wore pink to promote breast cancer awareness.
RU will next hit the road for five consecutive meets before coming back to the RAC on March 18 to host the Big Ten Championships. The away stretch starts in Chicago next Sunday with a meet against UIC at 3 p.m. ET.
