MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. - The Rutgers women's basketball team dropped an 80-46 contest to Minnesota at Williams Arena on Saturday afternoon.
Rutgers (6-19, 3-9 Big Ten) was led by Shrita Parker with 10 points and eight rebounds. Classmate Jazlynd Rollins also netted double digits finishing with 11 points and six rebounds.
Minnesota (13-12, 4-8 Big Ten) managed 32 points off turnovers and scored 27 points from the charity stripe. They had a trio in double figures with Kenisha Bell and Gadvia Hubbard with 19 points each in the win. Carlie Wagner added 12 points.
The Golden Gophers capitalized from the line and on Scarlet Knight miscues early in the game. Minnesota took a 17-5 lead after the first stanza closing out first quarter action on a 15-3 run, including a string of 10 unanswered points.
Rutgers was hampered by foul trouble as starters Rollins, Aliyah Jeune and Victoria Harris each played with three fouls in the second quarter. While Minnesota led by as many as 18, the Scarlet Knights managed to outscore the Golden Gophers, 15-12 in the second frame. RU ended the quarter with seven unanswered points over the final 2:18 to cut it to a 31-20 Golden Gopher advantage at the intermission.
A Juene jumper from the left wing star started off third quarter action and saw the Scarlet Knights trail by single digits. Two free throws by Rollins would make it a nine-point ball game once again at 33-24 with 7:07 to go.
The Gophers, however, would reclaim its double-digit lead. Minnesota employed an 8-0 run midway through the quarter enroute to outscoring RU, 19-3, over the next five minutes. The Golden Gophers went on to take a 56-33 edge into the final quarter.
The Rutgers women's basketball team returns to action on Wednesday, Feb. 15 against Purdue. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
KNIGHT NOTES:
- Jazlynd Rollins also led RU on the boards for the first time this season with a career-high eight rebounds. Her previous high was seven in the win over in-state rival Seton Hall (Dec. 13).
- Shrita Parker hauled in six rebounds and in the last four games has averaged 5.8 rpg.
- Minnesota shot 27-of-34 from the free throw line with Rutgers committing a season-high 28 fouls.
Conversely, RU was 7-of-9 from the stripe with its best free throw percentage since the Wisconsin victory (Jan. 4).
