Tennis Defeats NJIT, 6-1

PISCATAWAY, N.J. - Rutgers tennis swept the doubles point and secured five singles victories to defeat NJIT, 6-1, Thursday afternoon at the East Brunswick Racquet Club. It marked the second consecutive win for the Scarlet Knights to start the spring campaign.
"It was a good day of tennis and we showed a lot of focus," said head coach Hilary Ritchie. "This is a team that has a lot of talent, but we really have to execute to secure wins. We did that pretty much down the line today."
RU captured wins in all three doubles matches, with juniors Mingxiu Du and Chloe Lee delivering a 7-5 victory over Nathalie Habegger and Alba Rosas Garcia, 7-5, in the No. 1 position. Senior Ksenija Tihomirova and freshman Katherine Muzik downed Rafaella Sampaio and Natacha Minc, 6-1, while senior Farris Cunningham and freshman Jacqueline Cochrane shutout Natalija Tasovac and Ines Vujkovac, 6-0.
In singles action, Tihomirova and Lee added their first single victories of the season. Tihomirova won in No. 2 singles, 6-1, 6-2, and Lee contributed a 6-2, 6-3 victory from the No. 3 position.
Appearing in No. 1 singles for the second time in as many matches, Du produced a hard-fought 6-2, 6-3 win over Sampaio. Muzik and Cunningham also enjoyed wins in No. 5 and No. 6 singles, respectively.
The Scarlet Knights return to action on Saturday, when they travel to West Point, New York to compete against Army at 1 p.m.
