TOWSON, Md. - Competing on a short week, Rutgers gymnastics had a season-best performance on vault to register a 194.275 Friday at Towson. It was the sixth consecutive meet that the Scarlet Knights collected a team score in the 194 range. The host Tigers took first in the meet with a 195.675 inside SECU Arena.
"There were numerous great individual performances," head coach Louis Levine said. "Unfortunately we had too many mistakes to get the win tonight."
After competing Sunday in Chicago, RU returned to the road for the second of a five-meet road stretch and its first Friday meet of the season. The Scarlet Knights' next home meet will be the Big Ten Championships scheduled for March 18 at the RAC.
The vault lineup in the second rotation highlighted the night for Rutgers with a season-high 48.950, just 0.025 shy of a top-10 program total. All six competitors reached at least 9.725, with freshman Erin McLachlan leaping to a career-high 9.850 to place first in the meet. Sophomore Riahanah Ali also had her best showing of the season, and tied her career high, at 9.825, while freshman Chloe DeVries added a 9.775. Both sophomore Michelle Amoresano and senior Claire Jones impressed to a 9.750, and junior Libby Groden rounded out the high scores at 9.725.
Jones' routines of 9.900 on both floor exercise and balance beam additionally sparked the Scarlet Knights. The veteran set a new career-high on balance beam, reaching the mark on floor exercise for the third time as a collegiate gymnast. They were the first two 9.900 performances of the season for RU.
As a team, Rutgers started off on uneven bars and scored a 48.025. Senior April Baker picked a 9.800, as McLachlan matched the mark with a career-high swing of her own. Freshman Kaitlyn Hall, who was competing for only the second time, notched her best so far at 9.725.
The Scarlet Knights would follow vault with a 48.800 on floor exercise. Jones paced the group with the 9.900, but Ali also went for a 9.875 for her highest number this season. Groden and Amoresano collected a 9.800 and 9.700, respectively.
Finishing up on balance beam, Jones tied the meet high with her finest beam result of 9.900. Baker contributed her second 9.800 of the night as well, with freshman Polina Poliakova also gathering a career high at that mark. Groden had a 9.775 to total a 38.200 all-around total.
Rutgers will return to the road for two meets next week, starting Friday at Southeast Missouri at 7:30 p.m. ET. The Scarlet Knights will then travel north to Central Michigan for a March 5 competition.
