IOWA CITY, Iowa - In its final tune-up before the Big Ten Championships, Rutgers gymnastics scored a 192.650 Saturday in a Big Five meet held at Iowa's Carver-Hawkeye Arena. The Scarlet Knights have now competed in all nine opposing Big Ten venues since joining the league.
The results of the Big Five meets at Illinois and Iowa have now locked in the placements for next week's Big Ten Championships hosted at RAC. RU will compete in the noon session along with Minnesota, Michigan State and Maryland. Nebraska, Illinois, Ohio State, Michigan, Iowa and Penn State will all take the gym at 5 p.m. Click here for the official website.
"We started off with a great vault and ran into too many mistakes on bars," head coach Louis Levine said. "I thought we did a good job of fighting back on the last two events. I hope we learn something from today that will help us finish out with a great meet as we host Big Ten's next weekend."
The Scarlet Knights scored best in the first rotation with a 48.800 vault performance. Senior Claire Jones led the way with season-high 9.850, while freshman Erin McLachlan put up a 9.800. Both junior Libby Groden and sophomore Riahanah Ali contributed a 9.725, and sophomore Michelle Amoresano rounded out the scores at 9.700.
After junior Makenzey Shank paced the uneven bars group with a 9.775, RU went on to collect a 48.675 on balance beam. Shank recorded her seventh mark of at least 9.800 this season to lead the lineup, as senior April Baker followed at 9.775. Jones and Groden each earned a 9.750 routine.
RU then took a bye before finishing with a 48.750 on floor exercise. Ali had a team-best 9.825 and Groden had her best number of the day with a 9.800, her fifth time reaching the score this year. Jones came up with a 9.775 and Amoresano added a 9.700.
Groden went all-around for the 11th time this season and totaled a 38.925. Amoresano also competed in all four events for a 37.800.
Rutgers will next return home after five consecutive away meets to prepare for the Big Ten Championships. Tickets are available by clicking here.
