Mills Paces Scarlet Knights at Big Ten Championship

MAINEVILLE, Ohio - Junior team captain Emily Mills carded a 226 (74-79-73) to lead Rutgers and place 23rd in the 83-player field at the Big Ten Championship, played Friday through Sunday on the TPC River's Bend Golf Course. The Scarlet Knights finished 14th with a 948 (316-316-316) total in their final tournament of the season.
"Today was a fun day for me out on the course and I am really happy with the way I played this weekend," said Mills. "It was another solid round for me and I was able to roll in a few putts, including one for an eagle. It was nice to end the season on a high note."
Mills had 31 pars, seven birdies and an eagle on the 6,357-yard, par 72 course. She was even on par three holes and minus three on par fives to earn her second consecutive top 25 finish at the Championship, after placing tied for 12th with a 214 (67-72-75) as a sophomore last year.
"Emily finished the season with a top 25 finish in a very competitive field," said head coach Kari Williams. "The course was very challenging and demanded an array of golf shots, and we are looking forward to being back again next year. Each player is heading into our offseason with specific aspects of their game to work on in order to prepare for our fall season."
Rutgers had 129 pars, 19 birdies and an eagle in a very competitive field that featured five nationally-ranked programs. The Scarlet Knights finished four strokes out of 12th place and registered a better final round than both Indiana and Penn State.
The travel party consisted of Mills, junior Tatum Jackson, redshirt sophomore Ashleigh Greenham, sophomore Astrid Aneman and freshmen Ana Maria Cortes and Carrie-Ann Lee. Six golfers competed, with the top four scores counting towards the scorecard.
Greenham tied for 53rd with a 237 (78-79-80) and had 26 pars and six birdies to her credit. Jackson carded a 240 (82-78-80), Lee a 249 (82-80-87), Aneman a 252 (87-82-33) and Cortes a 258 (85-84-89) to complete the RU scorecard.
Michigan State claimed the Big Ten Championship after shooting a two-over 866 (298-283-285). The Spartans, who won their seventh Big Ten title, earned the conference's automatic berth to the NCAA Championship. Michigan State was followed by No. 12-ranked Northwestern (868), Ohio State (877), Wisconsin (884) and Michigan (892).
Michigan's Elodie Van Dievoet won the individual Big Ten title, shooting a six-under 210 (69-71-70). Michigan State's Sarah Burnham finished second (211), followed by Minnesota's Emie Peronnin in third place (212).
