UNIVERSITY PARK, PA. - Guided by a three-RBI single for Nicole Bowman in the top of the seventh, the Rutgers softball team rallied a 6-4 comeback victory over Penn State in the series finale on Sunday morning at Beard Field.
Trailing 4-2 in the contest, Rutgers loaded the bases in the top of the seventh, as Bowman went on to clear them with a base hit to put the Scarlet Knights in front. Sophomore Whitney Jones then sealed the win by retiring her seventh consecutive batter at the plate to end the game.
Sophomore Nicolette Anico led RU (12-31, 3-12 Big Ten) with a 3-for-4 performance at the plate. Freshmen Taryn Atlee, Anyssa Iliopoulos, and Bowman followed with two hits each. Jones earned the victory in the circle.
Penn State (20-26, 6-11 Big Ten) was led by Rebecca Ziegler with two hits, an RBI and a run. Madison Seifert suffered the loss for PSU.
Rutgers opened the contest with three consecutive hits from Anico, Atlee, and junior Rebecca Hall. Hall's single would send Anico home for a 1-0 lead.
Penn State added a run of their own in the bottom of the first to tie the score, 1-1. The Nittany Lions then tacked on three unanswered runs to move in front, 4-1, after five innings.
In the top of the sixth, Rutgers registered a run on two hits to cut into the deficit, 4-2. After a double for Bowman, Iliopoulos added a double of her own to send in the run.
Jones would go on to register a 1-2-3 inning in the bottom of the frame to keep it a two-run game.
Rutgers carried its momentum into the seventh, rallying four runs on five hits to claim the lead, 6-4. After freshman Hailey Hoklotubbe loaded the bases with RU's third hit of the frame, Bowman sent a single to left field to send in all three runs for the lead at 5-4. Todd then joined in with a double to tack on another run for RU.
In the bottom of the frame, Jones posted another 1-2-3 inning to close the door on Penn State.
