SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. - Behind three home runs for the offense and 5.2 scoreless innings of relief work for sophomore Whitney Jones, the Rutgers softball team completed its comeback to top Seton Hall, 13-7, on Wednesday afternoon.
After RU opened the game with a 3-0 lead in the first, SHU countered with seven unanswered runs for a 7-3 lead by the bottom of the second. The Scarlet Knights then responded with 10 unanswered runs of their own for the win.
Jones registered five consecutive scoreless frames, allowing no runs in 5.2 innings of relief to pick up her second win of the season. Juniors Rebecca Hall and Sierra Maddox, and freshman Anyssa Iliopoulos all added home runs in the win.
SHU was led by Alexis Walkden and Hailey Arteaga with two hits and two RBIs each. Lauren Fischer and Walkden also added home runs. Madison Strunk (3-4) suffered the loss for the Pirates.
After an RBI double for Hall added the first run, Maddox followed with a homer to set the RU lead at 3-0 in the top of the first.
Seton Hall responded with seven unanswered runs, including four in the first inning and three in the second, to move in front, 7-3.
Following a triple from Maddox to leadoff the third, senior Bridget Carr would reach on a fielder's choice to send Maddox home. A two-RBI single for freshman Taryn Atlee added two more runs for RU to make it a one-run game at 7-6.
Jones, who entered in the bottom of the second, posted a scoreless frame in the third, stranding two Pirates on to keep the margin at one.
Hall then tied up the score, 7-7, with a homer to lead off the fourth frame. After a hit for Carr and an SHU error put two runners in scoring position, junior Meaghan Wells entered to pinch hit and sent in two runs with a single to return the lead to RU for good
Although the Pirates loaded the bases in the bottom of the fourth, Jones registered another scoreless frame, retiring two straight at the plate to strand all three runners on.
RU posted two runs on two hits and a Pirate error in the fifth to push its lead to 11-7. In the top of the sixth, a two-run homer for Iliopoulos cushioned the Scarlet Knights lead, 13-7.
Jones sealed her outing with back-to-back 1-2-3 innings in the sixth and seventh for the win.
