
Volleyball Begins Home Slate Against Siena Wednesday

NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J. (Aug. 29, 2017) - Fresh off a 2017 East Carolina Invitational title to open the season, Rutgers volleyball launches its home schedule against Siena at College Ave. Gym on Wednesday, Aug. 30 at 7 p.m.
The Scarlet Knights host International Students Night, where fans are encouraged to stick around after the match for an autograph session with the Rutgers volleyball team. All fans in attendance have their first chance at picking up a 2017 schedule poster on Wednesday night.
SCOUTING SIENA
• The Saints are looking for their first set win after starting the season 0-3 with a trio of sweeps at the Syracuse Tournament on opening weekend against the Orange, Grand Canyon and Colgate. Siena is coming off a 12-18 campaign last season, including a 10-8 mark in the MAAC. A conference semifinalist one season ago, the Saints were selected to finish sixth in the MAAC preseason poll.
• Senior Samantha Pethokoukis was named to the Preseason All-MAAC Team at middle blocker. Pethokoukis played in 20 matches last season and recorded 147 kills with a .305 attack percentage. The middle blocker added 14 service aces and 38 digs. She recorded 66 total blocks, including five solo. Her 0.94 blocks per set were the highest on the team, while her 2.81 points per set are were the third most on the squad and the most of any returner for Siena.
• The Saints' roster is made up of eight newcomers, including freshmen Nicole Deobler and Dakota Jackson, who lead the squad early on in kills with 22 and 16.
CROWNED
The Scarlet Knights opened the 2017 season with a tournament championship at the East Carolina Invitational. Following a loss to Georgia State, Rutgers rebounded with the first two victories of the season over William & Mary and the host Pirates. The Scarlet Knights opened the day with a 3-0 win over W&M (25-16, 25-19, 25-22) and clinched the tournament title by bouncing back from a lost first set to win 3-1 in the evening over host ECU (19-25, 27-25, 25-17, 25-22).
Freshman opposite hitter Kamila Cieslik was named the ECU Invitational Most Valuable Player after averaging 4.30 kills/set, while sophomore setter Megan Sharkey (9.09 assists/set) and freshman outside hitter Yana Kamshilina (2.30 kills/set, 6 blocks, 19 digs) were selected to the All-Tournament Team.
DOMINANT DEBUT
Cieslik made an immediate impact and currently ranks atop all Big Ten players with 43 kills through opening weekend. The Rutgers rookie did her damage on a .407 hitting percentage while adding two assists, 18 digs and seven blocks. Her hitting percentage ranks 10th in the Big Ten.
