PISCATAWAY - The Big Ten Conference announced its 2017-18 women's golf preseason honorees on Wednesday, with senior Emily Mills, redshirt junior Ashleigh Greenham and sophomore Carrie-Ann Lee earning recognition.
A three-time team captain and one of the most accomplished players in the history of Rutgers women's golf, Mills receives the preseason accolade for the second consecutive year. A three-time Women's Golf Coaches Association (WGCA) Division I All-America Scholar, she set a program-record with a 67 in the opening round of the 2016 Big Ten Championship. A Big Ten Conference Distinguished Scholar, Mills has led the Scarlet Knights in stroke average every season, posting a 75.70 as a junior, 75.57 as a sophomore and a 78.27 as a freshman. A Cell Biology and Neuroscience major, she is enrolled in the School of Arts and Sciences Honors Program.
Greenham serves as co-captain along with Mills and made an impact during her first season at Rutgers after transferring from Arizona State. Also a WGCA All-America Scholar, she had a 77.27 stroke average in 2016-17, playing 32 rounds in 11 tournaments. Greenham tied for 2nd at the Lady Blue Hen Invitational and finished second at the 60-player Nittany Lion Invitational with a 217 (73-72-72) last fall.
Lee posted a 78.63 stroke average as a true freshman in 2016-17, playing 27 rounds in nine tournaments. She carded a season-low 74 in the third round of the Nittany Lion Invitational to begin her collegiate career.
The Scarlet Knights are coming off another productive season under head coach Kari Williams. Honored as one of the nation's top 25 programs in academic performance by the WGCA with a school-record five student-athletes named All-America Scholars, the team faced nationally-ranked programs and top-ranked individuals in every event. Rutgers concluded its season with a 310.00 scoring average, second-best in the program's 40-year history. In the community, women's golf had a 100 percent team participation rate and compiled 307 community service hours in Rutgers Leadership Academy initiatives.
The Scarlet Knights begin their season by hosting the Rutgers Invitational September 9-10. The event is the first of five tournaments on the fall schedule.
