Scarlet Knights hold position in first USTFCCCA regional rankings of 2017
NEW ORLEANS (Sept. 11, 2017) – Rutgers men's cross country has been ranked 10th in the Mid-Atlantic by the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association in the first regional rankings of the 2017 season, released on Monday.
The Scarlet Knights finished the 2016 season with that same ranking following a 10th place finish at the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional Championships at Penn State. The 2017 Mid-Atlantic Championships will be hosted by Lehigh University on Friday, Nov. 10. The top two teams and top four individuals receive automatic qualification for the 2017 NCAA Cross Country Championship, to be held on Saturday, Nov. 18 in Louisville, Ky.
"It is great to be ranked in the Top 10 in our region," said head coach Mike Mulqueen. "It is a strong region, and we are hoping to improve from week to week and see a higher ranking as we approach championship season."
Rutgers has been able to secure its Top 10 ranking with a first place team finish to start the season at the Lehigh Invitational, followed up by a second place team result at the Fordham Fiasco. Finishing second overall individually in each of those races was sophomore Cole Pschunder.
RU is set to race the Rider Invitational at Rosedale Park in Hopewell, N.J. this Friday, Sept. 15. At Rider, the Scarlet Knights will face off against regional opponents St. Joseph's, ranked one spot better in the region at ninth, and both host-school Rider and Temple, unranked in the latest poll.
From Rutgers' 10th place 2016 Regional Championships finish out of 22 teams and 157 runners, Mulqueen returns six point scorers in junior Conor Murphy (47th), junior Dom Munson (53rd), senior Luke Wiley (54th), senior Trent Brinkofski (60th), senior Alexander Livernois (71st) and Pschunder (111th).
