Olympia Martin & Kiera Nealon The First Two Scarlet Knight Finishers; PR's For Four Veteran Scarlet Knight Harriers
BOSTON, MASS. – The Rutgers women's cross country team's performance at the Coast-to-Coast Battle In Beantown produced several notable results as two freshmen runners collected sub-19 minute times and four personal bests were set from returning Scarlet Knights.
"I think the two freshmen out front leading the way was a great sign," said head coach James Robinson. "We need to run closer together between runners four through seven in order to place higher in the overall standings."
The Scarlet Knights raced against 179 competitors from 22 schools, including four teams ranked among the top 30 in the latest USTFCCA Poll.
Freshman Olympia Martin was the first Scarlet Knight across the finish line for the second-straight race this season. The Ridgewood, New Jersey product logged a time of 18:33 to lead the pack.
Martin was closely followed by fellow Scarlet Knight first-year, Kiera Nealon. Nealon, who hails from Manalapan, New Jersey, posted a time of 18:56.
Sophomore Emma Bergman collected a new personal best with her time of 19:04. She bettered her previous top time of 19:51.5 from last season's Metropolitan Championships.
Senior Alexandra Juzwiak put in her best 5K performance since her freshman season. The North Middletown, New Jersey native crossed the finish line in 19:12, her best time since helping Rutgers to the Metropolitan Championship Cross Country title in 2014 with a top 10 performance.
Sophomore Stephanie Mauer also managed another Scarlet Knight PR and dropped below the 20-minute mark. She registered a time of 19:23, resetting her prior personal best of 20:12.4 at last year's Metropolitan Championships.
Junior Genevieve Cickavage also beat the 20-minute mark for the first time to set a personal record. The Moorestown, New Jersey native ended the race in 19:33, besting her previous mark of 20:15 from the Monmouth Invitational in 2015.
Sophomore Lou Mialhe was another Scarlet Knight to produce a PR. Mialhe, from nearby Princeton, New Jersey, set a new best of 19:54, also dropping below the 20-minute mark for the first time.
Also racing for the Scarlet Knights on Friday afternoon were Kaitlyn Bragen (19:48) and Kelsey Farbanish (20:43).
The Rutgers women's cross country team is back to action next week at the Paul Short Invitational hosted by Lehigh in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania.
