Six of Seven Rutgers Scorers Collect New Personal Bests
BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Nearly all the Scarlet Knight scorers boasted new personal bests in the Rutgers women's cross country's appearance at the annual Paul Short Invitational on Friday.
"The top six runners were only 50 seconds apart and six of our top seven runners ran personal bests," said head coach James Robinson. "We're heading in the right direction and we'll continue to improve as the season continues."
In all, seven of RU's 10 harriers posted new PR's against a field that featured 367 runners from 43 teams from across the nation, including four nationally-ranked squads from Villanova, Utah State, Georgetown and Mississippi State.
The Scarlet Knights raced on a familiar course having competed on the Bethlehem, Pennsylvania path in the Lehigh Invitational to open up the 2017 campaign. They will again run the course at the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional on November 10.
Freshman Olympia Martin continued to lead the Scarlet Knights out front and was Rutgers' top finisher third-straight meet with her fastest 6K time to-date of 21:31.
Right on Martin's trail were senior Alexandra Juzwiak, with a finish line time of 22:03, marking her best performance since her 2014 Big Ten Championship showing, and sophomore Emma Bergman, who bested her top time from the Lehigh Invitational four weeks ago, coming in at 22:12.
Sophomore Stephanie Mauer contributed to the Scarlet Knights PR's topping her previous best captured at last year's Paul Short with 22:15.
While sophomore Nadia Saponara was not able to best her top career finish, she was a mere :03 seconds shy off the mark, and finished the race in 22:19.
Also scoring and registering personal bests were freshman Kiera Nealon with her time of 22:20 and sophomore Lou Mialhe collecting a time of 22:35.
Other Scarlet Knights racing on Friday included Genevieve Cickavage (22:49), freshman Kaitlyn Bragen (23:22) along with a new PR set by sophomore Kelsey Farbanish (24:07).
The Rutgers women's cross country team is back in action on Friday, October 13 at the Metropolitan Championships at Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx.
