Women’s Golf Set to Host Annual Rutgers Invitational
Sep 06 | Women's Golf
PISCATAWAY - The women's golf team will host the annual Rutgers Invitational this Saturday and Sunday, September 9-10, at the Rutgers University Golf Course. Eleven colleges are competing in the 54-hole event, with 36 to be played on day one and 18 on day two.
This year, the Scarlet Knights welcome Albany, Delaware, Fairleigh Dickinson, Georgetown, Hofstra, Long Island, Sacred Heart, St. John's, Siena and Wagner.
Senior captain Emily Mills will be working to defend her Invitational title. Last September, she carded a 220 (74-71-75) to win the 70-player event by six strokes. Mills registered nine birdies with 35 pars and was two-under on par five's on the par 72, 6,041-yard course. Her second round 71 was the only under par round of the event.
Propelled by the Mills' performance, the Scarlet Knights placed second in the 12-team field with a 934 (312-306-316) total.
Delaware will be looking to defend its team title. Buoyed by four players among the top 10, the Blue Hens won their second consecutive Rutgers Invitational title last year, carding a 919 (313-298-308).
After a practice round on Friday, tee times will begin at 7:45 a.m. off the first and 10th tees on both Saturday and Sunday. Live scoring will be available on birdiefire.com or via the Birdie Fire app.
The Rutgers University Golf Course was founded in 1894, when four men and four women organized the New Brunswick Golf Club. One of the earliest clubs in the United States, it was among the first members of the United States Golf Association. In 1933, the Depression led to the bankruptcy of the club, which was purchased in 1935 by Rutgers for $15,000.
A new era was launched in 1961 with the construction of an 18-hole course. Expertly designed by Hal Purdy, a noted golf architect, the course was officially opened May 29, 1963. Over 6,041 yards in length, the picturesque, tree-lined, PGA sanctioned course is a par 72 for women and offers a challenging layout with four teeing areas per hole. Highlights include narrow fairways, fast greens, and water hazards on nine holes. A course layout can be viewed here.
Rutgers students are invited to watch the conclusion of the final round on Sunday and receive a free "fat sandwich" from 12:30-2:30 p.m.
